Icon10 Need advice please! I have a 126610LV what should I get instead?

Hi folks,

I am pretty new to the forum still so I appreciate any input/help! I don’t have a large collection or anything (some Cartier, Rolex, Tudor)6 total, I enjoy learning about watches and wear everything I own a lot.

Anyway long story short I have a very sentimental 116610ln sub I will never sell. Then I got the call from my AD and picked up the 126610LV. I love both but I also have the pelagos 39 so generally too many dive watches (for my modest collection at least). Sorry if that was long! Again thanks for any help (I’ve been thinking about the 126655 or vintage idk)

Of those three, yes the LV will get you the most money to use on another watch, but it’s the diver to keep IMO.

I'd opt to compliment a Sub with a GMT. You can try newer Cerachrom ceramic bezel or go to vintage Bakelite/aluminum.
Vintage models can really patina on the bezel and has lovely colouring to them ..

Buy a DateJust (preferably on Jubilee) or an Explorer.

No need for another rotating bezel sports watch.

Just me here, but if you've got too many divers- which I don't see how lol- the Pelagos would be the one to go.

If you’re going to sell your LV now is the time. The new bezel green released this month will “alpha-male” the current model. People will tout the darker green is discontinued, but it will decrease in value just like other discontinued models that have been alpha-maled with a newer version (Air-King 116900, Sub 116610, Explorer II 216570, etc…) As people want the newest release, a Rolex discontinuation no longer mean more value.

Really? Never heard this opinion. I'd argue the opposite. The so-called Hulk and Smurf Subs now sell for much more since they were discontinued. And how about the "John Meyer" Daytona? And go back further, the discontinued Zenith Daytonas and even the 116520s sell for (relatively) crazy money.

Prices (value) almost always increase when a Rolex sports model is discontinued.

I do love the explorer I and lucky to have one in my small collection. I like the idea of vintage gmt or even modern but as Ollie1982 said maybe I don’t need another rotating bezel sports watch haha.

Any thoughts on the 126655 or is 28k too much for that ?

Also guys what about a zenith Daytona inverted 6? I’ve always wanted a Daytona but the last 7 years has put me off from it. I feel like it’s overplayed these days, maybe I’m wrong but wanted to ask the groups thoughts?

The Zenith Daytona is under-valued and under appreciated, IMHO, despite its strong pricing. For starters, it's beautiful, especially with its symmetrical, more elegant dial (unlike Daytonas with in-house Rolex movements.) Plus, historically, it's a very important watch for Rolex as its first automatic chronograph. Throw in the interesting cross-branded movement with Zenith, and it's a great collector watch, especially the black version with its sub-dials that patina to varying degrees.

The tiny details, including the inverted 6, never impressed me. I always just try to find the best condition example in my budget, regardless of the dial details.

I disagree with the "almost always."

I will concede the Hulk, John Mayer, Smurf.

Recently, Rolex has tweaked their models just enough to make the previous, discontinued references less desirable -- from slightly changing the bezel color like in the Pepsi, and now the LV, to refining the lugs.

Discontinued 116710LN is the cheapest GMT of all six-digit GMTs and cheaper than in-production GMTs.
Discontinued 116713LN is the second cheapest GMT of all six-digit GMTs and cheaper than in-production GMTs (though it has gold in it).
Discontinued Batman 116710BLNR cheaper than in-production 126710BLNR
Discontinued Air-King 116900 is cheaper than in-production Air-King 126900.
Discontinued Explorer II 16570 and 216570 cheaper than in-production 226570.
Discontinued Sub 16610 and 116610 cheaper than in-production 126610.
Discontinued steel bezel Daytona 116520 (non-Zenith) cheaper than the until-recently-produced 116500LN ceramic bezel. (Will the in-production 126500LN be more expensive than the discontinued 116500LN?)
...

So, not "almost always." Actually, it's the opposite.

You're comparing apples and oranges. A true assessment of value is what did the watch cost on the secondary market when it was in production, and what does it cost now. You're comparing the current cost of discontinued watches to watches now in production.

The question was whether a Rolex sports model increases in value when discontinued. Just about all those discontinued watches on your list are absolutely more expensive to buy on the secondary market since they were discontinued, hence more value.

For example, when they were in production, a used 16610 Sub could easily be bought in the $4K range. In the 13 years since it was discontinued, the price has doubled, and then some, depending on condition and whether it's a full set. And how about 14060 Subs and 16710 GMTs? The prices since they were discontinued have definitely more than doubled on the secondary market.

That may have been your question, but that wasn’t mine. It was about the OP’s LV. I said the now-discontinued 126610LV with the darker green should be sold now before it drops in value. Yes, the new, in-production brighter green will make the darker green less desirable than it is today hence reducing its value, just the way we saw on the Air-King 116900, Explorer II 216570, Sub 116610LN, etc... The Hulk/Smurf/John Mayer effect can’t be applied to the darker-green LV.
