I can't know that, if I looked into it, he would tell me the truth.

I know this is getting pointless but are you not then a bit disappointed to find out that what you thought was a “real rarity” and “teleported from 1972” and “1/13th of production” is just a fake or a redial ?

For all collectors I think it’s better to point this stuff out and learn from it.

Of course I feel a little disappointed. However I have in my hand a nice watch that I paid little.

Maybe you can share with us the name of your dealer ?

Pricing on something like this is interesting, and one man's "little" is another man's "a lot". It's all completely subjective unless one knows what was paid.

Obviously that is between you and the dealer, and none of our business.

For everyone else...

It is worth pointing out however that whoever it was that originally purchased the watch from the Yahoo Japan very clearly paid over the odds for it. And as mentioned earlier, the listing specifically stated that the dial had been redone, and that the case had been repolished, although any dealer worth their salt would not need telling either of those things.

IF the watch was in basically "teleported" "NOS" condition, then the price paid at the auction would indeed have been an absolute bargain. True NOS examples of this reference (with the blue dial) can sell for $4k or more. Not $600. Just as a reference point, a NOS example of the white dial reference (complete with original caseback protection sticker) sold on YJ just last week for $1500.

It's not 2015 anymore. Nobody picks up a NOS vintage Grand Seiko for a bargain price, unless an individual in Japan lists it on Yahoo or Mercari, not knowing the desirability of watches in this condition, for a low "BiN". OK, so that can happen, but it's very, very rare indeed.

But certainly, nobody is going to be picking up a NOS vintage Grand Seiko for a bargain price from any dealer.
