Happened to me years ago and I got a thumbs up on it from the good burghers here or vrf.

Lifesavers.

Thanks for coming back to us too btw.
Turo, is swaini3 one of the more experienced guys over there?

Yes indeed he is, and is top and knowledgeable contributor here too .... and he located the earlier link with unusual examples I see from a quick peep earlier on VRF.
I suspect Xeramic, Jed, Jose or Mike will chime in as well soon, can take a few days though so suggest you sit on you hands for a day or so, then give it a little 'bump' if needed ...

Xeramic chimed in with the explanation and I couldn't be happier! Check his posts over there. All of the guys there and here are great! As I said over there, my love for my baby was just rejuvenated.

Xeramic is seriously sharp. He’s like a Rolex wizard of sorts.

There's always more to learn with vintage Rolex. I've seen plenty of things that are unusual, but still legit.

Thank you Turo but far from an expert. Anyways, in this field, always best to get at least a few to confirm or share their thoughts. Ofcourse, the names you mentioned know their stuff.

Genuine or fake

The reasons why serial numbers can have one font, and the ref. number have a different one is based on the old method of midcase process and production.

When some models shared the same midcase, the serial numbers were engraved during production but the ref. number side wasn’t.

Then, when a batch were destined to become a DJ or another model, and before heading to benches for assembly, the Orig. Design & ref. number were done. The different machines and different processes yielded different results.
