Sunday Lunch - Tonkatsu とんかつ


I wore something dark to visit Cho Cho San. Not because there’s a dress code, but because a tiny stain on your shirt will pop out like a Yayoi Kusama installation against the restaurant’s spotlessly white interior.


Let’s kick things off with edamame; the soybeans arrive warm, juicy and clad in a hefty armour of nori and togarashi, a clear sign that the kitchen is willing to go the extra mile, even on the classics.


Next they bring out Petunia ocean trout, which comes coated in an oh-so-subtle pepper and wasabi oil. It leaves the palate feeling primed and buzzing for whatever’s next.


Dining at Cho Cho San is just as much about feasting the eyes as the taste buds.


Eggplant Miso sticks, are crunchy on the outside with gooey goodness inside, not usually a fan of aubergine but these are tasty Af


Love izakaya


Silky spicy sesame noodles tossed and twirled with Ume furikake


TONKATSU: FRIED PORK CUTLET w’ bulldog sauce


Super crispy airy on the outside and juicy on the inside and served with a refreshing cabbage salad, what a meal!

Husband and I traveled to Japan a couple of years ago. Have I mentioned that I have a life threatening allergy to fish and shellfish? Turns out that allergy is MUCH more common in the Asian population (most likely due to the overwhelming exposure). I found a company that makes laminated cards with (insert your allergy here) in almost 100 different languages. We travelled for over a month. We found restaurants, handed the card to the server. In most cases the chef came out and said “this, this…”. In some cases the chef came out and said “There is nothing here I can serve you.” We learned pretty quickly that “tonkatsu” was something I could do.

yes it was, the mrs got the Yuzu Martini i had to carefully navigate mine everytime i took a sip i almost got a nose full of shaved ice
