Hello there.

Im new to this forum after browsing for a few weeks, and im finding it quite addictive ha. I always find myself having a little look on here when i get a spare moment

Ok let me introduce myself.

My name is Tony im 35 and live in England and have been a rolex watch owner for a few years now.

I have a couple of questions to ask the brains on here, firstly I had a baby boy in Dec 08 and bought him a brand new Sea Dweller (V47****) to keep for his 21st birthday from my local AD. My girlfriend is pregnant again and i managed to get my hands on another SD (V47****) from my AD about 6 weeks ago, again im going to keep this for the childs 21st birthday present. my question is, would these watches have appreciated greatly in 21 years considering they will be untouched( boxed tagged plastic film still in place)? and my second question is, what would be the best thing to do regarding servicing. Would they need more regular servicing because they are not being used or would they need less for the same reason?

at your rather unique post and introduction.

No, no......not trying to be rude at all.......it's great to know that you've been so thoughtful in buying up Rolex watches so much in advance!!

Well, 21 years is a long, long time.......so not sure how you plan on storing those watches. You could just keep winding them once a month (say around 40 turns of the crown) and set them aside each time.

Since the watches will have no actual physical use, I guess you could wait around 10 years before handing them in for their first service.

Congratulations on the babies! I actually had thoughts like you, but instead of keeping the watches in a box, I plan to wear mine, and when the time comes (18th birthday or university graduation) hand it over to my son (if there will be a son). I think a used watch that the kid saw on his/her father's wrist will always hold special memories that you can't get with a brand new watch, no matter how old it is. Of course it's not difficult to hand over not one, but 2 watches (to 2 kids): you just need to wear them both by switching between them in a couple of days rotation.

Like JJ has already mentioned have them serviced just for a general check up around the 10 year mark.

Two boys, that excellent! I'm awaiting my second, Have a feeling this ones going to be a boy, first was my little princess Raiyne (Girl). I don't have a Rolex for her, just a bank account where I keep popping money in

Welcome to the forum! You live in a beautiful country and congratulations on the new additions. You are wise to have identical watches for your eventual gifting. I'm between a rock and a hard place because I have three grandsons, one 8 and twins 5. I have a SS Daytona, a SS Sub/date and a TT DJ. Someone is going to be disappointed unless they are allowed to pick and by chance they would all get the one they want. Not likely. Anyway, I have a long time to think about it and hope I'm here to have the dilemma.

I think that it is an interesting plan....... Like JJ mentioned, a full wind once in a while is enough, although I'll bet that they would not need to be cleaned and oiled until you were about to present them..

But, I too will laugh...... mostly becasue after raising some youngsters into adulthood, I know that tastes and ideals may not be anywhere close to your own 21 years from now..

As for value......... there are way too many on the market to reallly expect much more than keeping pace with inflation..... now if you were to bite the bullet and find a couple of older, collector models, professionally refinish them, and hang onto those for that same 21 years, you might get a college education out of the deal..

Yes yes yes! When I was about fourteen my dad told me I could either have his '84 sub or his Speedmaster when I graduated high school. I chose the Submariner because it was his every day watch and I haven't regretted that decision even though the Speedmaster is long gone.

My husband's father had a Whittenhauer watch that he wore for special events. When his father passed away, my husband was given the watch. He treasures it and has worn it for many special events in his own life, like our wedding.

I think you having these for your children is a really neat idea. I think it would mean alot to your kids if you maybe wore the watches for special times like their birthdays, christmas, family pictures. So when you pass on the watches, they will remind your kids of these special times with you. I think they would mean even more if your kids could look back at their favorite picture of you with the watch on.

Just my 2 cents!

Nice one purchasing the V-SD's for the boys, but I think you should wear them until it's time to gift them! Nothing like seeing shots of your old man (in his youth) wearing the same watch you have on your wrist!

Well thanks for all the advice and info everyone, but i think i will keep them in storage for the kids, just the idea of them being box fresh appeals to me somehow. Anyway, i have a Orange hand explorer 1655 , a Rose Gold Day Date and a Patek Nautilus 5710/1a that i wear quite often, so they can squabble over them when i fall off my perch ha ha ha!

This is my first contribution to the forum but have been following it for the past 6 months.

TonyW, thanks for asking the question for I have something similar to that.

My son will be entering Nottingham University next month to do Medicine and I am seriously thinking of giving him a Rolex upon his graduation in 5 years time. With the prices of Rolex increasing annually, I think I should get the watch now instead of upon his graduation....or should I?

My intention is like TonyW. To keep the watch unused inside the case with the plastic on.

So JJ, what I need to do is just to wind the watch about 40 times once every month.
