Re-dial or original Explorer 6150 dial
This Rolex Explorer is reference 6150 (confirmed with number between lugs and inside casebook) but has an unusual dial: "officially certified chronometer" that usually belongs to 6350s and the underline. I am interested in purchasing this watch and the owner said it has been in his family since new, in 1953. In 1962 it went back to Rolex and, he says, they removed the radium and exchanged it for tritium but did not place a new dial.
Question: Does this make sense? Would Rolex replace the radium and place an underline on a 1953 dial? Does an underline mean "tritium" exclusively or could it mean something else and was on the dial from 1953? Or, was the dial replaced in 1962 with a left-over 6350 dial? Thanks for any and all of your thoughtful responses!IMG_1028-2.PNG IMG_1032-2.PNG IMG_1029.PNG IMG_1027-2.PNG |

It is highly unlikely that Rolex, or anybody else, would have scrubbed or scraped the radium off a dial, then re-lumed it with tritium as a shop-fix.
It is much more likely that the dial was replaced with a tritium dial, which the underline would have denoted.

Thanks Tools
Makes sense to me. If so, does that change/decrease its desirability (or authenticity) given that it is not the original watch from 1953?

Not likely imho...
Is this the piece.... https://www.chrono24.co.uk/rolex/exp...1_ODiWfe&pos=4 Most are unusually PRECISION auto's, not OCC of course. Any chance it could be a 1016 service underline OCC dial (fitted in 62 to 64 - underline period), as looks similar - no idea about feet and fitting just a thought...... luming like a lower radium content Underline too btw. Edit - 0cc 1016 though are typically UP TO 596*** srl or 1960, and wouldnt be underline as such, so i'm doubtful. https://explorer1016.com/gilt/chapter-ring/mark-0-occ/

Evening
What is not likely? it being an original or it loosing desirability given it is likely a redial?
That is the piece. it is definitely a 6150 with case number c/w 1953, but it seems to have received an OCC dial at some point. Thanks |

What is not likely?
This is the piece. It certainly can be 1016 service dial or even a 6350 dial? But the case is 6150. Thank you |
