Why gold now??

Are the gold day dates selling below retail now a worthwhile time to buy ?
Will Rolex raise the price?
Also, I do realize there is only about $10,000 worth of "melt" value gold ina Rolex .
The question is , if you've been coveting a gold Rolex , can it go lower ?

No one knows. Guess it depends on the model. Which one are you interested in?
I guess somewhere this year Rolex will increase prices. Then it’s easily a few thousand more.
But in general I would assume the prices on secondary market will drop further for PM models.

The content of gold in a rolex is irrelevant. Under that logic the par value of a SS watch would be few hundred bucks if that. Gold never has been the go to for collectors and gold watches sat for many years until we got into the free money/print to hell phase of the economy.

To answer your question directly no one knows if it will go lower.

If the Day date was made out of steel it would still be near 20k just because its a Rolex with date day complication. Add that extra 10k in gold and the watch is in the 30K in value so the gold is not what justifies the price, there is more value in a Day Date than just gold. I think it’s definitely worth buying one if you have the funds, retail or grey.

There is less than a dollar worth of stainless steel in a Rolex, that makes a PM watch look like a bargain if following your reasoning.

Truth is there is no rationale for buying any luxury goods. Without exception they are all overpriced SS, PM or leather products.
The CEO of the LVHM group is the richest guy in the world thanks to idiots like myself who buys loads of their overpriced products

I love gold watches. Even thinking about how the screws are made of gold is cool to me.

When I first got into Rolexes, I used to wonder why people would buy gold. As I've gotten older and my career has taken off, it's my preferred metal.

Imo 18038 and 18238s are a good buy today if you want a DD. Many nice examples near NOS (very minty) and full sets for 15-17K USD. A buy at those figures for me.

This. 904L is $2-4 a pound. There is quite a bit of machining loss in creating the the head and bracelet but even if you figure a lb. per watch in raw steel the final product isn't worth much. As raw materials a Rolex is essentially worthless unless scrapped by the ton (like 7000 Submariners) and even then not much. We aren't buying raw materials. You'd do better with copper wire and circuit boards.

If you were so hard up that you'd melt the case and bracelet - even at todays gold value - you be lucky to clear $5-6K.

You'd make more selling the watch.

DD's (as long as they are working) will beat melt value unless the sky is falling. And if it was, you'd have bigger problems...

I had a friend who years ago couldn’t justify spending the money on a Rolex he always thought the reference he wanted would come down in value. The only problem was the price went the opposite way and he ended up with an inferior brand. And now he looks at my GMT with what could have been.
If you like something enough and you can afford it then just buy it because trying to second guess the market is just that a guess

If you look at pre-covid prices, new (normal configured) 228238’s were $26-27K. Although MSRP prices were a bit lower than current. So, a big difference from MSRP back then.
Could the prices go lower…? It’s certainly possible, but anything below retail now seems like a bargain. I’d think the days of very deep discounts like pre-covid, are over.
Waiting to see if prices go lower is up to the individual, but I’d watch the trends to see if they actually start to creep up across the board, not just a certain model.
The market will go up and down week to week these days, I’d say buy when you’re ready, and comfortable with what you’re spending.

If it is the watch you want, find the best example you can, at the best price and buy it. Rolex prices only go up over the years and you will be fine. The value of owning and wearing the watch is hard to measure.
