Would you?? Sea Dweller

Last night I was offered a Sea Dweller for 2,545gbp no box or papers. It's in a shop that I have bought several watches from in Qatar. I did not get the serial number so I'm not sure of the age but it's in excellent condition looks to be a couple of years old.

Worth buying or not?

Cheers
Dave

No, it could be stolen and then you would never see it again when u send to a RSC for servicing if the serial is flagged, thats still 5,000$

I am not certain of the currency exchange but since the watch is discontinued and if you like it, why not get one??? I would hold out for one with a box/papers however... just my 2 cents.

The problem out here in the Gulf most of the second hand watches do not have a box or papers. Sad I know but most of the poeple selling their watches to the dealers have no interest in a box so they throw it away, I dont know maybe it's an arabic thing.

Well first if you have bought several watches from him in the past then I would say you have a reliable source. If its a non lug hole case its post 2002/3 if lug hole pre 2002/3. And the only change to the SD since 1988/9 is the non lug case and few minor font details.Box papers are not all that important as when you have watch serviced by RSC. You will get service papers that are almost as good if you ever what to sell it,box if you want one can be easily bought.I would always haggle on the price no matter what was asked by anyone.

Get the serial number & call the Rolex Lost or Stolen Register. I've only got the UK number though, I'm afraid:

01322 625 400

They will take your telephone number & call you back.

If it's a new(ish) watch it should be easy to get a box. But haggle on the price taking into account a Rolex service is a minimum of £250

Hope that helps

Not a particularly great deal. I paid quite a bit less for mine, LNIB with open papers, Z-serial, stickers still on the case. But I guess they have gone up in 18 months.

I've walked by a 1997 SD every day this week in a shop near Liverpool St in London. I think it's about the same price, which is a starting point.

If it is a Z or an M serial then that is a decent price. Personally, I don't get hung-up on Box/papers. The watch could still be a stolen piece even if it has the box/papers, and once I buy a Rolex...........it is staying with me and not EVER getting sold.

That is no great deal. Hold out, unless import taxes are absurd you should not buy there. If you travel out of the country often you can work a deal here and do a FTF somewhere you travel often and avoid the taxes by wearing it home. When customs asks why you have the box, you are anal and have a bit of OCD. You do not understand how people can just leave their watch laying around overnight.

I purchased a watch years ago in Texas privately and when I called Rolex to run the serial number by them to see if it was stolen they explained to me over the phone they could not provide me with that information and only can run the serial numbers when it is physically at the RSC. This way you never get it back and are SOL.
I just had a watch stolen from the RSC in NY. Check out my thread.
They told me it will eventually turn up but who knows. Try searching on the internet by Googling the serial number.
