How to guard against modern Patek frankenwatches?
I saw a stray comment in another post to be wary of Patek frankenwatches on the gray market. It seems the person meant frankenwatches of modern Pateks, particularly Nautiluses. He pointed to Singapore's gray market and said Far East Plaza in Orchard Road, with gray dealers who have in house watchmakers, is a source of concern.
Is this possible and how would one guard against this? Are there specific dealers more reputable than others, and is having proof of servicing by Patek (or even an actual authentication by the service center) important in a gray purchase? |

The "Grey Market" is a legitimate market selling new products, it is not the used or secondary market.
If you are getting faked, modified, or false products you are in the Black Market, which is criminal. Use well known, responsible, Dealers and you will get an honest shake.

Well, that’s certainly a Grey Marketeer's view.
There have been many reports of excellent Patek fakes on You Tube which even the experts have trouble identifying unless they take them apart. One doesn’t know if the trader is reputable, Grey, Black or a victim in ignorance, by accident or design Buying a stolen watch must be a nightmare once it’s caught by a service department as there is no refund available, just confiscation and total loss. You sound a bit complacent for my taste but I feel sure you mean well. During the bubble period flippers ‘Grey Dealers’, popped up like mushrooms. Buyer beware! Is the best approach and then some. Buying a modern PP model without papers is highly risky, another £2.8 million pounds worth of luxury watches stolen in London recently from 247 Kettles… Where will they be sold? |
