Don’t get offended so easily. Was pretty clear he meant it in the context of “did I get a bad deal”

Attached are some pictures, as you can see it was pretty damaged. I think she went swimming in the sea... expensive mistake!

Dial was swapped out by one of the second hand watch sellers in Gray's (off Bond Street) who has since ceased trading. Hence being unsure on the face, but that's the design she wanted and that was a more economical way to achieve it!

He was a brave chap to not look in the back. But flanked by two two 'friends' that were a bit intimidating. Pulled out a HUGE wedge of cash to pay. Probably why I query if I made the right choice as I did feel a bit pressured at the time!

Yet to have the conversation with my wife... but your replies will be helpful when she accuses me of being mugged in the street!!
Oh no, mate, I think that's the Harrison "lesser watch"!

The way I see it, it's more like the other way around. I wouldn't have paid you $200 for the watch, let alone the amount you got!

Amazing you actually had to say that.

I expect that the guy will make an effort to clean-up and get this nice little watch up and running.

Choosing to do what it takes to rescue a worthy watch isn't for everybody.

Making a business deal is a choice we need to make and move on.

I think you got the best of him. He's going to be 2k into service minimum which is what we call the CROWN tax. You only swim with it in the open position once and pay the tax. Never again.

You're incorrect and being unduly sensitive.

He robbed them though, stiched them up like a kipper.

Poking holes in a fish is violence. This is a ridiculous thread and an insult to the kippers who were actually stitched up. There was no use of a needle and thread here.

A full service is around £600-£800

Once you add on, new gold crown, new crystal, replacement damage parts, new handset, you are almost certainly going to be looking at £1,400

Then you will need a new mother of pearl dial. Doubt they will be any less than £500.

If the watch is in such a bad state, I'd expect the bracelet to have significant stretch. A refurb on the bracelet is probably £800-£1k
A new bracelet maybe double that around 2k.

To refurb this its going to be 2.8k to 3.8k depending on what route you take with the bracelet.

The watch would sell for 3.5k, maybe 4k. They would offer you up to 40% lower than the higher end as trade in.
I think this is a pretty good analysis! From the pix it looks like most of the value was in the dial and unless the watch had great sentimental value it would not be worth the rerfurb. I'd say you did not get taken and I'd take the £850 and put it towards a new timepiece.

Thank's all for your replies! Certainly good information for when I explain myself to my wife...

I put the 'robbed' in quotation marks to indicate that I didn't really mean a robbery, more did I get the wrong end of the deal. Which sounds like I didn't so thanks again for your comment!

Now to find a replacement from a reputable dealer!
