Earlier this year I went to a conference, where the keynote speaker was with the national Negro Leagues Baseball museum.

He gave a very interesting presentation about the League and many of its most famous players. He speaks all over the country, to raise awareness and funds. I learned that the League itself did not restrict ticket sales based on skin color. The players and the teams welcomed all fans.

Wearing that cap is a sign of respect for those players who battled racism, and, through their dignity and excellence, overcame it. Jackie Robinson of course played in the Negro Leagues before MLB and the Dodgers. He is an American hero.

FYI the museum sells caps:

Buy the hat & wear that hat. Nobody cares.

Any Yankee fan wearing that hat in New England deserves a couple of jeers

I love baseball and am a believer that we are all afforded the same freedoms no matter our color or anything else. I like the style of a particular cap and I also like that it brings light to a league and history that doesn’t get much recognition.

Do you believe it would be insensitive of me to wear a specific Negro Leagues cap?

of course not. i guarantee you not a damn person who crosses your path will have any idea that the hat you're wearing is a Negro League team's moniker/logo.

Back in the late 90’s, there was a brand called FUBU. I bought a couple of tshirts and sweaters in NYC while shopping. That evening, I wore one of the sweaters out to a trendy restaurant. A not white male came up to me, he had gold chains, gold teeth showing and dreads. He asked me why I was wearing that sweater? I said because I like it and just bought it. He said, I should not wear it. I innocently asked why not and he said that the initials of FUBU means….For Us By Us. Meaning not for me. I had no clue and this guy made me feel uncomfortable. Anyhow, I still wore it through out dinner, but when I left, the first clothing store I walked by, I jumped in and grabbed something else to wear for the night out. I did not want any BS.

It doesn't look like much has changed. In an era when advertising is very diverse (multiracial and gender diverse) everywhere you look, fubu.com is monochromatic.

While wearing the negro leagues hat because it looks cool and celebrates a forgotten league promotes the positive in theory, in practice someone will inevitably take it the wrong way and stir up a ruckus. I think the instincts in the OP are correct. In the interest of not being on the wrong side of someone else's bad day, I would leave it at the house.

Wear what you want. It's not your job or duty to make anyone else feel comfortable.
