Life sucks

Im facing having to maybe put my last cat to sleep.....I've cried all night knowing this will be my last one at my age,,,his other brother(s)) died on his 12 b-day the other cat on my 67th bday leaving Fox who out of all the cats I have had has been the most special to me since he was born....by far the smartest one .....I would give all my money to save him if I could.
Being an ER nurse and in the ER its sad mostly but after years you kind of get use to it. One young man I cant forget that had a piece of rusty iron bounce off a truck crash the windshield at came through his neck.....He was scared he was going to die and I held his hand telling him he will see his 6 month old son grow up.....the damage was to much he died later that night....I think it was 2009 and I still think about it. As doc House says everybody dies and there is nothing you can do to stop it....cats included. The only pain worse in having my cats die was when my son OD'ed.....parents are not suppose to bury their kids.
At least I have Foxy for today.

I can tell you, in my years of owning veterinary hospitals, I've seen many people make decisions for their pets for their own sake. I don't know the details of your cat's ailments, feel free to share if you'd like. Our pets rely on us to do what's best for them, not what's comfortable for us. Though it's always a hard decision, decide what's best for him and, if that is euthanasia, make that gesture of love for him. Find solace that you've taken his pain onto your own shoulders. Good luck and Godspeed.

Sorry to hear, Barbara. Foxy sounds like a special cat, who’s had a great life with a loving family. Take care.

Sorry to hear it, it's never easy to let go to family (and furry ones are family). Fox is lucky to have spent his life with you and vice versa.

I know it's too soon, but don't automatically consider him your last cat. If age is a concern, there are lots of older cats needing adoption because everyone wants a kitten.

I’m extremely sorry for what you’re going through. I went through something similar a few years ago and I still think about it almost every day.

They were part Maine Coon.....Kidney failure?.....same thing that's killed 4-5 of my cats in the past. I'm waiting for lab work to come back Monday....see how he is doing......so far tonite he seems more like foxy.He eats but not much and has got very picky over water he wants fresh water every 3-4 hours....unless he sees me rense out his water dish he wont drink it but stands over it looking at the water then back at me. I have the special litter that turns colors if he has infection etc....it looks good. He is over 14 so yeah he is old

“this will be the last one at my age…”

We had a good friend and neighbor that was in his mid 80s when he got a yorkie puppy. She was a great lap dog and brought him much joy the last two or three years of his life. When Bob went into hospice his granddaughter took the dog as her own. Don’t keep up with her but I’m sure they’re doing fine. My wife and I worried about Bob taking on a puppy at his age but it turned out to be a great thing for him.All that to say, uou should think about getting another cat.

Terribly sorry for your loss.

But life doesn’t suck. You are winning the game. So many perish at a young age. You have lived and had opportunities to love your pets.

It’s all about perspective. And yes, nothing positive about losing a loved one. But certainly so much positive in taking joy in the life you had together.

And so many older cats need homes. You can have more. You should have more.

Don’t give up. Don’t give in. Ever.

I am so sorry Barbara. I had to euthanize my dog of 17 years in 2011. It was devastating even though I knew it had to be done. Still miss her. I have 2 cats now that are just about 13. Still act like kittens

To add:

My father died just over a month ago. He was 79. Sick for many years.

My mother got a puppy 18 months ago. It’s keeping her sane, and from going down the rabbit hole. She has a few options given she is likely to die before her puppy.

Make plans. There are options. But don’t give up. A new friend might be exactly what you need.

Life sucks

Barbara, I’m terribly sorry for what you are going through and for your son’s OD. Yes life sucks sometimes…. but it then gets better too.

I too lost my dog a couple of years ago, and TRF helped me cope with it as I ended up receiving so much love and support from our Rolex family here.

I hope in time you can benefit from the compassion that the members here can show you, and find your balance again. It will happen, I promise you!

After I lost my dog, I waited a few months to see how I felt. We ended up getting a new puppy and it was the best decision ever.

Perhaps keep an open mind to considering other options, fostering, older animals, etc, in the future if/when ready. I do appreciate you’re hurting now, and you still need to check the lab results today, so no rushed decisions needed….

For this moment, feel what you feel. Sending you my thoughts and prayers.

Just wake up every day and be happy to be alive and see the sun. And find a reason, any reason, to keep going. Could be a friend, a partner, a (new) pet, a support group, a hobby…it doesn’t matter.

Nothing wrong with being down when you lose something or someone close to you, but it doesn’t mean you have to be out. Dust yourself off the best you can and keep living your life. It is hard and it sucks, but you have been through the hardest test and darkest times before when you lost a child, so draw strength and not weakness from that experience.

And reach out, whether it be through your local support network or here.

So true Seth. My mother has been a widow for 7 years now since Dad passed. She is lonely and miserable, even though we pass by almost every day. Its just not enough for them. A companion is an excellent option.

Very, very nice Paul.

We have all lost our small family friends, it is never easy.
As someone once said, "grief is the price we pay for love".

We're all standing with you Barbara.
