Box / Papers Question

Can anyone clarify when the current style box was brought introduced by Rolex? I had always understood this to be around 2015, but currently looking at a watch from 2014 which is supplied with a newer style box.

The watch I’m interest in is provided with an older style card (2 generations ago), green hang tag and red ‘seal’ tag. Normally I’d expect to also see an older style box, one with the fixed internal compartment.

Separately, if you were looking at a used watch with an incorrect box, would this put you off a purchase? The seller is reputable, but does leave me wondering if the box is wrong, could something else also be wrong.

If a watch can be faked, so too can a box and papers.

I'd be extra leery of a watch being sold with the wrong box as for that to occur, someone at some point was trying to be deceptive.

I'd pass.

I’m assuming you know that the presentation boxes come to the AD separately from the watch itself. Currently the white tag will tell the dealer which box each watch should have.
It’s totally possible that the watch you are looking at came in that box correct or not.
Wouldn’t be a big deal to me.

If someone added a box to complete the set, that is to the buyer's benefit, I would think.

. . .
Rolex did nothing by "model year" as a start/stop act, everything has carryover during introduction.

Also, there is really no way to tag a watch as a 2014, although the sales paperwork could be dated and give you that - but it is only a sales date, nothing more.

As mentioned, boxes and watches come in separately, they are not "matched" up until you buy it by the Dealer. Additionally, any watch that is used can come with any box from any place and you would never know.

The last gen box has a slot in the cover for the warranty card and manual, the newer ones have a panel in the cover that opens up for card and manual. Does not really matter as long as it’s a real Rolex box. Not a dealbreaker it’s just a box as long as everything else matches, IE, warranty card serial to the watch. Unless you are looking for a matching box from that time period.

Cheers,

DO THIS.

Go down to the Rolex Classified ads here on TRF. Roll back to 2014 ads. You should see plenty of examples with the latest generation box.

Don't look at the asking prices.

Buy the seller! If seller is trustworthy, who cares about the box, except it’s nice that one is included? As others have said, boxes and watches are shipped to dealers separately, and that watch could very well have legitimately been matched with the box in question. Good luck!

This. No one cared even ten years ago. SA yelled "Box!" and was happy with whatever they were handed.

Same. If I had a Time Machine, I’d buy a lot of Bitcoin and watches.
