The SS Sub (or Sub Date) is an excellent all around timepiece. I love my Sub as a daily. Keep it as your initial one. Plus, it has all the memories with your family. Wear it daily, and wear it well.

Beyond that, the sea is vast. Adding a PM piece...whether Sub, DD or other...is a big step. I own SS and TT. Excellent variety (metals, dials, colors, bracelets, etc). My plan is to eventually add a select PM timepiece to commemorate a key life milestone/retirement. Unsure if I'd wear as a daily, in rotation, or just special occasions. Or, I'll consolidate my collection down to a handful. I do feel at times that I have too many now.

My guidance is..there is no right or wrong answer. Too many watches to choose from, and no one is right or wrong. You must decide based on what speaks to you, how you will use it, the variety you want, and affordability.

My prediction is...like many other here...you may end up with the next one, then another, then another. It's hard to stop with so many great timepieces. Choose wisely....

I really enjoy my 12 series sub date. I would have it in every flavor and not be bored.

Recently I’ve been flirting with the idea of a solid gold sub to join my stainless, or a day-date.

We have just relocated to Florida and we visited the local AD for the first time. Great experience with them so far. Very nice, very accommodating. Seemingly honest about how many people are awaiting the same watches.
Not that it was a surprise.

It was also the first time I had my ultimate configuration for a DD on my wrist.
40mm, black dial, non-diamond marker in YG.

Really hard seeing myself with a two sub collection after getting to see the DD in the flesh.

We ended up leaving with a few complementary goodies and my name on the “list” for a DD and my wife for a YG white dial Daytona.

Those of you with a SS/PM collection. Were you content with the two piece assortment. Or did you yearn for more variety after some time?

Thanks!

I would keep the 126 stainless sub and get a YG DD40 228238. I have one stainless 126622 and two YG, a 116718 and a 228238. There is nothing like a DD40.

Think you are on the right track with the Submariner + Day-Date combo.
Imo, can't get more iconic than that for a Rolex duo.

Let us know what you decide.

Sublime. Great take/advice.

I was lucky enough to be around a few over the last week or two. All types of settings and attire.

Last night sealed the deal. While we were at a tree lighting event there was a guy with a white dial 40.

It’s truly a wear anywhere with anything piece. And a white dial is what I’m aiming for.

Love the pic. Saved it!

I thought for a long time that my graal was a YG DayDate. When I got there, I kept it only for a year. Of all the Rolexes I have owned (SS and TT), I have only kept 2 TT (and my first Rolex of 1986). I like TTs because they are a little bit more upmarket than the SS without being over the top. Every now and then I consider a PM (5-digits only), but I think I am content with the 16713 and 16613 I have.

In March 2018, I was able to acquire the 117618. In hindsight, at a fantastic price. It was my grail. In the past 6 years of ownership there have definitely been periods when I didn’t wear full gold much and I even thought able selling it at one point. It’s a flashy piece to wear. However, I do love it.

In October 2018, I received a 116500 black dial from my AD. I sold the SS gmt 116710 when the Daytona arrived.

The 116718 and the 116500 are my only two Rolex since then (2018-2024). I’ve almost bought a 3rd a few times, but it would be SS and just wouldn’t compare to either the SS Daytona or gold GMT. One day I will add a 3rd but at this point I have other priorities.

Over the years, I’ve acquired the oysterflex and super jubilee bracelets for my Daytona so I have three options for my SS piece. They all wear ver differently.

I’m a big advocate for the 1 SS and 1 PM. I’d say it’s the best “wearers collection” with a reasonable cash outlay. I wear one of them everyday. Mostly the Daytona, but the GMT is great too.
