Google Gemini AI Assistant

I kept seeing all the Gemini ads on tv this past week which looked pretty impressive. Initially I thought it was only available on Google Pixel phones. Turns out it's available for download to all Android and even iOS devices. Downloaded it and so far it's pretty neat. You can have full-on conversations with it on just about anything. Or you can use as a simple assistant like Alexa.

Has anyone else given it a try yet? What are your thoughts? Im wondering how much info it is collecting on me every time I use it, but it does seem to come in handy. Any tips for interesting ways to use Gemini or other AI systems?

As long as this thing doesn't turn into Skynet I'm onboard. But the speed at which AI is progressing is a little scary.

I have regularly used Chatgpt for about a year. It regularly gets things wrong (both in the facts it sources and how it runs calculations/logic). That said, you can correct it easily, including by asking in plain language whether its approach makes sense, how it can improve the analysis or by questioning its sources. Similar in some respects to the AI summary Google provides with its general Google search. For example, Google AI summary will sometimes lift the search result that ranks highest and rely on that information in its generated summary. If that is some blog post, that author’s opinion, right or very wrong, can form the basis of the AI’s summary of “facts”… ChatGPT is prone to similar issues as it is not a true AI (and AGI) but rather relies on statistical methods applied to existing data, and then convincingly combines it with its large language model to format responses in natural language format.

So long as you understand it isn’t true AI, is prone to error, and the resultant limitations, it can be a useful tool. I use it for some basic (but time consuming) number crunching tasks where I know values exist in the public domain and can verify the source data. It is a good productivity enhancement tool but is far from as advanced as some portray it…

A guy in my office uses chatGPT to draft emails.

The one he sent me as an example wasn’t bad.

I’m a diehard Pixel user and got my 9Pro about 2 months ago and have been using Gemini advanced since I got the phone. I got a free year of Advanced (it’s a subscription service after that and I’m not sure if I’ll renew vs the free LLM)

So far it’s been quite impressive, especially with integration with my email, text, photos etc.
Haven’t installed it on my iPad, but I may…

Google Gemini AI Assistant

I was fascinated by ChatGPT when it first came out. I developed software for a living and was highly impressed by what they achieved (I’m now retired BTW). But honestly, I never use it anymore. I also downloaded the ChatGPT app to my phone, which is relatively new. But again, I don’t use that either. Probably because I have no use for it since I don’t do anything important anymore. lol

My pet peeve with all these is how the definition of AI has morphed over the last couple of years. AI has become a generic marketing term used to describe any software with advanced capabilities. But the truth is, none of these companies have developed true AI yet if you go by the original definition of it.

We’re still far away from AGI, and especially ASI and self-aware computing.

That said, ChatGPT, Gemini and others will most certainly improve over time and get better and better.

EDIT: there was a recent study out of the UK (I believe) that demonstrates that ChatGPT is now outperforming doctors when it comes to diagnosing patients. That’s impressive.

Do people company-wide use it a lot? Everyone I know turned to it constantly a couple years back, and now none mention it.

I’m not familiar with anyone else using it beyond the guy that brought it to my attention and as far as I understand he just uses it for rough drafts for emails.

We use Copilot (Microsoft's LLM AI) at work. It works & it helps, but you need to constantly provide it with the bowling lane bumpers or else it can get into a dumb-dumb loop & be unable to get out of its own way. ChatGPT is excellent & is the best free one out there.
