Some years ago reports of shark attacks started to be appear and they seemed to multiply exponentially just like the drone frenzy.

Turned out not only were shark attacks down worldwide but you had 10 times more chance of being injured by a falling coconut than bitten by a shark.

Human nature makes it look easy for conmen, charlatans, & scammers.

A person is smart. People in agroup can be very gullible. The drone hysteria is a great example. Like lemmings, panic in the herd over something that happens every day, but now it's become somehow evil and must be stopped at all costs.

Very true. Only thing I will add is these comparisons between “odds of X” vs “odds of being bit or killed by shark” are really not fair.

Consider the real comparison should be those who are exposed to each risk - very few people globally are exposed to shark attack risk in any meaningful way. Only a very small subset - those who swim in the ocean (and some brackish waters for Bull sharks) and really of those, only the further subset who swim in waters with sharks known as risks to people. That is not a large group - heck, most people who visit beaches globally don’t even go in the water.

Now consider coconuts. If you consider areas where people may be exposed to coconut trees annually, we are looking at over a billion people. If considering those who are frequently under trees (multiple times per year or per month/week) still in the hundreds of millions.

Looking at it this way, the relevant question of “are frequenting areas with coconut trees more dangerous than swimming at beaches where sharks frequent?” The answer is a resounding no - the risk is far greater of being bitten by a shark…

Nope. The relevant question is:

Is it safe to wear a Rolex under a coconut tree?

And the answer is obviously YES. So if you don't want to experience a shark attack, FIRST put on your Rolex, stand under a coconut tree, and unless the sky or a coconut falls on your head, the sharks will leave you alone.

Evidence: There has not been a single reported incident of a shark attack following these precautions.

Lesson learned: Never swim where there are no coconut trees and you don't have your Rolex on.

Linked article posted yesterday by Aviation Week & Space Technology. Summary: joint statement from the Department of Homeland Security, FBI, FAA and the Pentagon basically says don't worry about the drone sightings.

Oh, if DHS and the FBI say everything is cool what could possibly go wrong? I’m sure it’s nothing though….

Yeah, unfortunately, these institutions don’t have the credibility they once had.

Either way, I’m more curious than worried.

So we're to just chalk it up to the USA government confirming for 100% sure that there are a lot of stupid people in NJ? That seems a bit condescending don't you think?

You have been doing that the entire thread

It is the USG. The question is what are they doing. Per usual, none of our business apparently.

I think we are learning a lot in Ukraine and the USG has let a few billion dollars worth of drone contracts to prepare for the new modern battlefield. They could be expected to fly a few missions in a few urban areas to test systems in real world terrain. They probably overestimated the ability of New Jersey residents to differentiate between a news helicopter and a drone, hence the hyseria.

Really? j/k

It is a very friendly jab at the fine folks of New Jersey, a State that brings so much to the country. We are all grateful for the tremendous efforts our brothers and sisters in NJ accomplish each and every day.

So, what did #FloridaMan do today?

I find it annoying that the federal government says they don’t know what they are, but they know they’re not a threat.

That’s like going into a hospital and the doctor saying, we don’t know what it is, but we know you have nothing to worry about.

Btw, the sightings have increased far beyond NJ. They’re being spotted in PA, MD, NY, CT, VA, OH, OR, CA, and other states.

But now you have drones chasing drones that are chasing drones, and then the videos of jet planes and helicopters just made it easy for folks to simply dismiss all of it.

Then there's a video of a guy shooting at a drone, except the drone was an airplane flying at high altitude about 20 miles away. He probably succeeded in shooting out windows and causing leaky roofs all over town, but he had zero chance of shooting down a drone.

This hysteria is going to end up getting someone killed by some vigilante kook in a panic over nothing. People need to put their tin hat conspiracy theories to bed and calm the F down.

Just an FYI, that’s not an official page for Manatee County Government. Manatee County Governments pages went black in 2022ish. I’m not aware of the new commission reinstating them as of yet.

Oh, my God..........

Just realized Santa could be shot down this week!!! Mistaken as a hostile baddy RED Russian drone! If it's red, you know it is Russian, or perhaps Chinese. NORAD needs to alert New Jersey ASAP not to shoot down our beloved Santa.

PS: Humor :)

HEY. Not all from NJ are stupid. Just most.

The select few (me!) made it out in the name of higher education & no more shoveling snow.
