Paxlovid
Has anyone taken Paxlovid for Covid? If so, I am curious how well it worked for you and if you had any concerns for taking it or any negative reactions to the drug.
I tested positive for Covid this morning and my doctor called in a prescription for Paxlovid, the low dose. This is the third time in three years that I have tested positive. The two previous times I was also prescribed Paxlovid. Full dose in 2022 and low dose in 2023. Both times my symptoms improved by the next day and I tested negative by the second day. I am on the fence about taking it this time as I have heard that it may be putting too much stress on the kidney and liver and that due to the virus morphing/changing that perhaps the efficacy is not as positive as it was a few years ago. |

I would also discuss it with your pharmacist.

I recently had my second Covid bought and did not take it because of what I read online. It came to a coin toss so I just rode it out.

My wife, brother-in-law and his wife had Covid and took it (they are in their 60’s). It made the symptoms milder and easier to tolerate. So I am in the “Yes, take it” camp.

OP
Not a drug I personally would take. Has interactions with other meds. 5 min video, rebound discussion https://rumble.com/v1ggbk4-dr.-drew-...und-effec.html

On one of my recent European vacations, I apparently caught COVID. I felt a little sick on the plane rid home, but thought it was just a cold. 24 hours later, I couldn’t get out of bed and tested positive. I was ultra-sick for about 4 or 5 days.
Weird thing is that I got better very suddenly. All the sudden I just had a burst of energy, felt great, and was back on my feet. It was like magic. I didn’t take anything except a decongestant. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Depending on overall health, I would not.

I took it during the thick of it way back when. I had to stop as it was the absolute worst drug/medication I have ever been prescribed.

Unless your doctor strongly advises you to take this medication, I wouldn't. I think I've had covid twice; the first time was brutal (back in 2021?), second time was just a wintertime sickness. I got through it with OTC-type meds. This is a decision for you & your health care team.

I've had covid three times. The middle time was by far the worst and paxlovid was available at the time. I don't have the contraindicating conditions, but my doctor went with OTC remedies anyway.

I surely would ask my doctor, not my pharmacist.
The first time I knowingly had Covid, I took it, and it did help reduce the symptoms and duration. The second time I had Covid was comparatively mild, so I didn't bother and the third time I think I had it (went to a conference and 40% of the attendees got sick) I tested negative despite symptoms, and again didn't bother with it. These threads remind me that I probably should get my booster.

I’ve read on this thread that people took the meds and said the symptoms were mild because of it. How do you Know? Lots of other people have said they didn’t take the meds and had mild symptoms.

An interesting data point, the first time was before the vaccines and the symptoms were the mildest. Vaccinated and boosted before numbers 2 and 3 and symptoms were much worse. Things that make you say hmmmm. |

That’s been my experience, too. It was mild first several times I had it. The last time I had it was bad, very bad (as per what I wrote above). I was on my back and in bed for days. But like I said above, it was strange how it just suddenly went away. It was literally like one minute I felt like I was dying, the next minute I felt completely normal and just got up, and started walking around the house. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

No experience, but I’d go with my doctor’s recommendation.

I had my first bout in Feb 2020… right at the start. Awful experience despite being relatively young and very fit, with no preconditions. After that my health was never back to baseline and the subsequent time I caught it (few months ago) was far milder but still more unpleasant than I’d expect after vaccines… As for the OP, best advice in this thread is to listen to the doc… but some common sense may apply too. The OP had good results twice already. Seems their body responds well… NOT my medical opinion but it seems rather straightforward unless a doctor flags compounding risks that outweigh the benefits… |

I got Covid two years ago, and was current with the latest vaccine. I called my PCP, and he prescribed Paxlovid. I had what seemed like a mild cold for a week and then it cleared up and I tested negative. Zero aftereffects. I still get the latest vaccine when they become available.
I'm 82 with a pre-existing condition that increases my vulnerability, so don't want to take any chances.

My brother in law (72 years old) took it back in September for Covid. He has had occasional nausea since which is possibly related to Paxlovid.

Merle, first off, I hope you feel better soon.
I had Covid one time and it was kinda brutal, symptoms kept compounding and worsening everyday. I did a lot of research and found that vitamin D won’t synthesize in your body if you’re magnesium deficient. I had been taking vitamin d3 and zinc so on the third or fourth day of symptoms compounding I added magnesium. It was unbelievable, the next day my symptoms started subsiding and within 2 days I was 100% symptom free (taste and smell were the last to come back). I have maintained this regimen of D3, Zinc and magnesium everyday since I started and I have not caught Covid a second time. I continued sleeping in bed and kissing my better half when she had Covid and took tests to make sure I didn’t have it and both times she has had it I did not get it. The first time I had it in early 2022 it hit me pretty hard. It was miserable.... the cough.... everything. My Dr. put me on Paxlovid at the end of the third day and I couldn't believe how fast it started to work. Like other members mentioned above, it is the worst drug I have ever taken. The metallic taste was so bad..... it tasted like I had a mouthful of dirty nickels in my mouth. Horrible. I wanted to stop taking the drug on the second day, however my PCP encouraged me to try and get past three days and assured me it would get better. It did. Second time, the symptoms were not as bad but still uncomfortable and a low dose for five days cleared it up. This time (third) same as last time. What type of magnesium supplement are you taking? Thanks |

Magnesium Citrate is a good all-around magnesium as a starter. Another good one is magnesium glycinate which is supposed to absorb even better.
