Ha Ha , this is timely(pun)…. 2 days ago I removed a cyclops from my sub 11610. For 30+ years I’ve looked at this everyday and thought it doesn’t look balanced. I sent my bracelet off to be restored(re-pinned)etc. and thought dammit I’ll give it a go at removing that glass carbuncle……and I did and I am so happy how it looks now….shoukd e done it earlier.

So why did you not just buy a no date originally I hear you ask????…… at the time, I couldn’t find one and had some money burning a hole in my pocket and couldn’t wait.

I don’t really notice the date window alignment.

I kinda like the cyclops but looks good without too.

But, what I really love, is a nice hole case Exp II on a strap. I don't know why but it's my favorite model of Rolex for strap use, always looks good I think. I'd love to pick up a black dial on someday for strap use.

Razor blade and a ball-peen hammer.

Tim, It was early in the day, maybe hungover but certainly not drunk

But you can retry as it only takes more glue and your ball-peen hammer and razor blade. This took a few tried before I was happy.

There are some watches that look without it. I used similar approach to remove the giant "pimple" on my now-sold Seiko King Turtle. The day date looked so much cleared without the giant cyclops which actually distorted the whole look.

Nice. Still would be a problem from the glare of the cyclops unless I could source with AR coating? But as per another thread, it may be an option at rolex to get a AR crystal replacement?

Thank you that’s just what I was needing.
Unfortunately the cape cod did not take off the slight remaining residue.

It’s about as visible as the LEC under just the right light so not a big deal.
Maybe a crisp new razor may scrape it off. Will try later.

Well, as a London AD once said to me a Rolex is not a Rolex unless it has a cyclops! It what sorts the wheat from the chaff!

Finally got around to it. Turns out a fresh razor blade took the residue off quick and clean.

Nice job! I'm ok with the magnifier on my 16570. But I also have a 14060M for that clean, symmetrical look.

The best and safest way to remove the cyclops is to remove the crystal and put a heat gun to the cyclops and it will come off in a snap. Any remaining residue can easily be removed with acetone or even a razor blade.

Place the crystal back on the watch and all is well again.

This sounds like a professional way to do things.
While I enjoy tinkering, opening the case back is a bridge too far for me.

A hammer on the other hand, that's totally reasonable

shortly after the cyclops operation, my submariner stopped working and this explorer was dragging a bit when I wound it up. I bought the explorer maybe 10 years ago and it had no service history at the time. Decided I may as well take it in with the sub.

Of course rolex wasn’t going to ignore the missing cyclops. They gave the movement an overhaul and replaced the crystal with an updated AR coating. The reflection and poor legibility of the date on the original crystal was a deciding factor in the cyclopsectomy.

So here she is unpolished but oiled where required.

They also insisted I purchase an original bracelet. Never had one for the watch. Swapped it out immediately.

Ps received this updated service pouch, I hadn’t seen one before.

Razor, hammer and watch all in one place scares the hell out of me.

And of course walking through midtown and the 20 or so watch shops that line Broadway and 57street, it’s like running the gauntlet. Never know when you’ll be drawn by a random display window…
