Rolex SD 16600 -- Departing Thoughts
what makes me happy is the thought that the 16600, even the V series, never got the Chapter Ring Branding ....this means that all SDs, from F-V series, cosmetically, are indistinguishable ...it got discontinued in its purest form.....
ok folks, now get back to work ... |

I think it's purest form was in about 1972.......but I stand to be corrected....

Well, I'm happy
Since I just bought my very late "F" series SD. I'm glad I got it when in did as I've been watching prices inching up lately on the auction sites. I now have both the Sub 14060 and the SD. Amazing what a difference in heft the SD has over the Sub. I've been an Omega fan for years and love the heavy feeling of my two Seamaster Pros. Now I have a Rolex that has a similar feel.
Now, no flames please claiming I'm comparing quality between Omega and Rolex. It's just that I like heavy watches and I love both brands about equally. |

I've had two, and now have a nearly new Z serial sitting in the safety deposit box. It will probably sit there for many years, and be a gift to my son in 20 years or so.
I'm on the fence though, as the significance of the watch really isn't there (for me). It's a watch I bought, practically never wore, and am saving to pass on to him when he gets married, or possibly graduates from college. The SD, in and of itself, exudes the fact that it's a purpose-made watch, has changed very little over the years (other than technology updates such as saffire crystal), and was never a highly sought after watch by those who simply wanted a Rolex to have a Rolex (ala the Sub). For this reason alone, I'll keep it safely tucked away (I don't feel the need to wear it b/c I have plenty of other watches to wear). On the off-chance my son doesn't want it, or wants something else, I'll then have a nice vintage SD on my hands.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I traded in my SD for a new TT GMT IIc and what a mistake had I made... I realized this right away... Love the GMT but really missed the SD which was my first Rolex. Long story short a member on this forum had purchased it used from the AD I traded it in at and I bought it back from him...best part, it was just serviced by RSC. I could not have had a better day For me it wasnt a value thing, it just had the importance of being my first Rolex and I too plan on giving to my son in the future. I still wear it regularly though, I bought it to wear and I am certainly not going to leave it in a safe... Its a watch for heavens sake.

Thank you, I could not believe what a small world it really is. I was reading a post and realized the poster in TRF was in WI and he had just purchased a used SD...low and behold it was mine. He actually sold it back to me without even making a priofit. His name is Old Rolex...GREAT GUY!!!

Great story mortgageguy. The world is small and getting smaller thanks to virtual worlds caused by freindships on the world wide web and sites like this one. |
