It will be very interesting to see what Rolex comes up with....sooner or later.........by way of a supercase EXII, the ceramic bezel kind of has the edge over the stainless steel. Maybe titanium or some other more precious or more resilient metal than SS may be used for a new model EXII

A few more details come to mind:

1. Spinning Bezel: As I originally mentioned, most people prefer the Sports watches with the spinning bezel. Not so much because they use it or fidget with it, but because it makes the watch look more like a dedicated tool watch. Kind of like how the Daytona has the three subdials and two extra pushers that give it that extra level of technical sophistication look.

In other words, many if not most people who own a Daytona rarely if ever use the Cosmograph funtionality–but it looks cool–like you are some kind of spy or something. I guess what I am trying to say is that the spinning bezel looks more intriguing–especially with the mirrored fluting circles on the spinning bezel that grab the light in a way and sparkle almost like a diamond.

2. Twinlock Winding Crown: All the sports Rolex models today have the larger, more masculine, sportier looking Triple-lock winding crown, but the Explorer II still has the more dainty Twin-lock winding crown which makes the watch look smaller.

3. Dated Bezel Numbers: I think the numbers on the Rolex Explorer bezel have a 1970s Battlestar Galactica Typeface which is dated and needs an update.

4. I attached a photo of the white dialed, no crown guard "Oreo Cookie" Pan Am GMT Master [Reference 6542] from 1958 that illustrates what a white dialed Explorer would look like with a black spinning bezel.

5. I also attached a photo of a customized customized "Oreo Cookie" and in the last photo, a customized "Vanilla Pepsi." What PCS did was he put a white Explorer II dial on GMT Master II. I think it looks better with the black spinning bezel.

Jake, great pictures. Good points, also.

You mention the Pan Am GMT w/ the white dial. Somebody the other day started a thread regarding grail watches. To me, this is almost the unobtanium metal of watches...the holy grail. Granted it can be had for a price, but the hunt for an original w/ the white dial could consume a lifetime.

Another allure to the Exp II for me was & is the white dial. Nearly all my watches, save for a three Breitlings (silver dial, orange dial, & yellow dial) have black faces. The GMT functionality, the under-the-radar looks, and the fact that it is nearly unrecognizable as a Rolex, were/are all big plusses for me, especially where I live now in Mexico. As somebody said somewhere in another thread, a crook/theif/lowlife scum can recognize a Sub from 100 yards; but the white dial Exp II would hardly draw a second look. Most people would see it and think you had a fake, as they have never seen a white dial Rolex.

And, they are a bargain in the used market!

Mine is easily in 95% condition, and it's a P serial originally purchased in 2001. I had it serviced immediately after I purchased it this summer, and still only have $2750 tied up in the watch. It's sort of a moot point, as I don't plan to sell it, but buying this for a song allowed me to buy two other lower-priced watches during the same time period.

The Exp II has my vote for sure. I am wearing it today on a black & gray NATO strap; it's light on the arm, looks great with the black surrounds & hands, won't draw a second look. For me, what's not to love?

A couple of days ago a new white face sold on E*** here in the UK for only £2600. A £1000 hit in just a few weeks. Buyers remorse had set in. - Expensive.
