I don’t think people in Hollywood understand just how much of an existential threat AI is to their industry.

It’s not just actors and writers that are at risk. It’s the movie studios themselves. Pretty soon, everyone will be able to produce their own movies from their desktop PCs. We’re not decades away from that. We’re only a few years away from that.

Hollywood studios and producers will fade away into oblivion just like carriage makers and switchboard operators.

Please generate a vintage 1960s James Bond movie starring Sean Connery and Raquel Welch.
Plot: A rogue nuclear scientist from Russia plots to destroy the world. He blackmails all countries for $1 billion. Bond saves the day.

AI will then produce a movie that equals or is better than any Bond movie from that era.

By the way, sorry about the plot not being that creative, but you get the point….

I don't think it will be that dramatic. There are still stories to develop, scripts to write, marketing to be done, and contracts to be written. While AI may some day be emulate humanity accurately enough to develop a compelling storyline, that is more than a few years away. In the mean time, Hollywood will adapt and figure out how to regulate AI in a way that allows them to monetize the technology to their benefit.

This notion that only Hollywood will have access to AI tools that can produce movies is false. These AI tools will be available to everyone. Lots of sharp folks will generate movies from the comfort of their own home. And it will quickly spread to ordinary folks after that.

Same thing goes for music. Pretty soon, you’ll be able to say:

Please generate a new Beatles album just like Rubber Soul. And that’s exactly what you’re going to get. It will be as good or better.

This is coming sooner than you think, especially with the ever increasing speed and processing power of the chips coming out.

Hollywood is just not going to be needed. People will generate their own movies.

I agree people will adapt. But technology has killed lots of jobs and will continue to kill lots of jobs. Switchboard operators is just one example. But technology also creates new jobs.

Why deal with human personalities? Maybe just a 'performer' and some backup 'people'. AI stays 'young' forever, doesn't get sick days, and can 'perform' anywhere... even in multiple locations in multiple languages, and can be adapted to your personalized preferences.

AI doesn't get pulled over driving drunk, have props go wrong, and AI certainly would never throw White Parties.

All great ways to streamline the business.

However, regulations will require human oversight, and those people will call in sick, take vacations, and throw parties that embarrass executives. You'll have the same number of employees, except the new ones will be no talent hacks with a vested interest in low efficiency.

Thanks for the link to Rick's video. I actually watched the whole thing! He makes some excellent points.

Remember the old days? I came of age in the 70s and played in numerous bands, I remember going to clubs (even when I was too young to legally drink) to sit in with the house band. Where can you do that these days?

We used to get gigs all of the time, weddings, rotary clubs, bars, heck even once I played with a band that got booked into a AA meeting! Man, that was weird. Everyone was smoking and no one was drinking.

I remember being in the studio and seeing / using the just-arrived Linn. Of course the introduction of MIDI (and Atari 400). Kinda was obvious the flaws, and how to work within the limitations... but the gauntlet was thrown and drum machines versus humans....

Meh... Music, video... the BUSINESS will do what's best for *their* interests imho.

PS: It'll be interesting see how video producers slowly eliminate humans as music producers have successfully done within the music biz.

Remember when everyone thought that computer technology would kill the music business since no one needed to buy records, tapes, and CD's? The industry figured out how to adapt to the technology and monetize it. Itunes is a gold mine.

The same will happen with AI. The market will figure out how to wrangle it into something that can be controlled and profitable. The one thing that humans are better at than making life threatening technology is figuring out how to profit from it.

Yep. It does raise questions about the processing power needed for AI. They seem to have achieved high performance results without advanced chips from North America.

But I think the markets over-reacted. I’m loading up on more NVDA stock. When it gets back to the 140 to 145 range, I’m reducing my position by half to mitigate further risk.
