It's so variable. I think visiting large chain ADs is essentially a waste of time. If you don't immediately click with sales or have a story, there's no telling when or if you get a call back. I was visiting large AD with a friend who was looking to buy his first Rolex and we just clicked with the salesman, had a good story, and my buddy got the call two months later. I was at another, coincidentally ran into a friend who was a large spender and was picking up a watch there, introduced to his sales rep, and thought for sure I'd get a call for the piece I was interested in and I haven't heard since.

My local AD who I've purchased the overwhelming majority of my Rolex watches from is family owned. I've been around them for over a decade. I am not even close to being anywhere near a big spender, but I get all my waches serviced there, my wife has bought jewelry she wanted and had other pieces fixed there, and we are recognized every time we go in. They will put me on any list I request and I feel they honestly work down it. I have jumped the list there for a very got piece, I have waited almost a year for a far less desireable piece that I turned down once I got the call.

It's just very variable. There is no formula.

I only expect to be treated like I treat others in business relationships with respect and honesty. These things are extremely difficult to come by at rolex ADs. Of the 6 i have visited in the last two years two have treated me like a customer! One that i like i was laughed at by two employees my first visit when i asked about a Ti yacht master they had two weeks prior in the case…

It all starts at the top and the more dealers I visit the more disappointed i am with the crown.

I know this is meant as a dig, but I still maintain that probably 80 percent of the AD related posts boil down to failure to use two lessons that everyone was taught in kindergarten:

1) Golden Rule- treat sales staff as actual human beings that are worthy of your respect. They may not be your financial equal, but they are your equal as a person.

2) Use your words- if you’re unsure of how often to stop in, how long it takes to get a watch, if you need to spend to get a watch, ask the only person that actually has this information, the AD/SA. When asking, see lesson 1 above.

The above means it is highly variable. I have never considered stopping by “just cuz” though I don’t transact every time I step in the store. Honestly, the frequency is dictated by my need.

What I try and do, however, is check with my SA on whether they’re in before I stop by. Not for something like picking up something from service, but certainly if looking to potentially buy or trying on something new.
I pretty much do the same.

My purchases for holidays and birthdays are spread throughout the year. I text the SA when I plan on coming in, even when dropping-off a watch for service. I'm at the AD often enough for the manager and other associates to recognize me and know I work with a specific SA, so I don't bother for pick-up.

The only time I'm at the AD is to conduct business. I figure time just talking to me might take time away from the SA making a sale, time is money. I'd hate to see the SA lose a juicy sale because I was just "checking in".

Has it worked? Two year wait for a two-tone Daytona. I'm still waiting for a steel gmt blro; it's been three and a half years. I'm very close to hitting the secondary market.

My AD/SA is ~ 2 hours distant from me. If I am going to be in the area on other business, I will call a week in advance to see if either of my SA's are available. They are both very kind ladies, and are always glad to see me. We have a great conversation, share some laughs, and say a cordial good-bye. Has this helped? Not really. Still waiting on a BLNR after 3 yrs., but I am in no hurry. Was offered the 126610LV twice, tho.

You buy something from your AD every other week? What are some examples? Thanks.

Not really. Just a general observation. It takes all sorts and they tend for the most part blend into a multifaceted whole.

My Kindergarten wasn't that advanced, but both these points fall under what I'd classify as basic common sense. I guess some were further back in the queue (or possibly in the wrong queue) when it was being handed out! I've been rebuked for stating that I ask SAs direct questions that require answers other than "it all depends/yes/no/ don't know. I can't remember who it was who told me off.

The ADs & SAs feed nightly on bats. If you quietly approach the front door, precisely 6mins after closing on the sixth day of the sixth month & leave your offering in a green box , legend says that you’ll be blessed with a steel Daytona that you cannot pass on, or else you will become a bat.

OP said he wanted to buy brand new from an AD.

Absolutely, I have, generally signing “Love, Nurse Kat”, but only if we were discussing matters tangentially related to health issues, and usually in the general subjects forum. As a retired Professional Nurse, I’m proud of having taken care of people who needed my help, and will never be insulted to be called “Nurse Kat”. As a caretaker by nature, I do think I sometimes try too hard to be helpful, when it comes to horological matters.

Superb. Glad that’s cleared up. I was just referring to you how you have colloquially referenced yourself. No harm.

I've tried the weekly (when I first got interested in watches a few years back), then monthly, now it's every 3-4 months and try to coincide my visits with client work if I am in the area.

Pretty much most visits I've made have been pleasant and we chat, but it's either the same script of scarce stock or I need to up my spend.

I know the game, I am STILL waiting for my first allocation. I do have other watches on my list so the longer I'm left waiting, the more time I get to save up for one of hte pricier pieces on my list.

Popped in a few weeks ago, just after New Year. Me and the SA have a catch up about Christmas and they tell me that they made a bespoke ring for their wife. (The AD also sells jewellery and diamonds and have a in house goldsmiths) Dropping ideas for me.

Like the ideas, but already do that.

I tend to stop in and pick something up whenever a gifting holiday comes around (Mother's Day, Birthdays, Christmas, etc).
I don't always get something extravagant, but I think buying from them regularly (when I'm shopping anyway) should help keep me at least on their mind when I want to talk about my wish list. It's gotten us 3 watches over the last couple of years, so I *think* it's working?

I'm surprised that you (non retired) guys have the time to check in consistently at your AD . I mean, how do you even make this work if you have a full time job and family?

I think it also depends on what kind of SA you have. The nose upturning here is likely due to the perception that some people visit the AD *just* to get a better chance to get the watch.

Depending on your relationship with your AD, one's or twice a month not bad.

The AD I frequent most is two blocks from my office. I stop in when I need something (they are also a watchmaker) or if I feel like looking at watches. There are enough new releases throughout the year, that there is usually something new to see.
All told this means I’m in there every 2-3 months. Which is pretty minor. Much more than that would be excessive.

But I’m not even currently waiting for a watch. That cadence still feels right.

Kat, no-one can ever be too helpful, I find it personally refreshing to see people offering advice and try to help people out, not everyone on here is an expert, not everyone knows exactly how to navigate the watch game, it can be daunting for some people, some threads I do think to myself why oh why are people posting the question they ask, ‘is it safe’ ‘can I wear a watch with the kettle boiling’ .. .. but trust me you don’t try too hard, you’re just you, and never change ..
