I think if Davi played Bond and Dalton played the villain, then the movie could have been a success because Dalton could have been hated from the heart for the way he played and what he played. But it is my humble opinion only
lol, while Robert Davi’s Sanchez is an underrated villain… he did murder Felix’s wife on the weeding day and then feed Felix to a shark, all after whipping a woman that was trying to escape from him. While Timothy Dalton’s Bond went off the reservation by going rouge (something that Daniel Craig’s Bond did in literally every single film), I don’t think you could say that he stooped to the level of Sanchez.

I think, maybe I remember wrong, as I saw that movie a very long time ago.

If I remember well, that lady slept with another guy, but instead of shooting her dead, he just beat him with a whip, without ANY visible sign on her. So it was not a serious punishment, but something that in that society could be called more like love. Without it, she would surely be dead.

Yes, it is true, that Felix was harmed by a shark, but was left alive! He was NOT killed! As far as I remember, it was not mentioned who killed his wife, we have seen only a scene when Moron Bond found her dead. And let us not forget, that it was A REVENGE, as it was more important to Felix to catch him, than to attend on his own wedding. So the day it happened was not because Felix had a wedding, but on the day when Felix catched him. The revenge was fast and cruel as it should happen in that world. If Sanches let him go without any punishment, the other villains would take this as a weakness. Based on this, as he left him alive was even a merciness. Sanches friend died later because MB made Sanches believe that he steled money from him.

Based on that, Sanchez was ONLY reacting to what happened to him. He only hurt those who attacked him, stole from him, or cheated on him. He only wanted to leave him alone. He did not want to take over the world, he was a top level drug dealer, but that was all. This person is not the archetype of a villain that 007 should be chasing! He was pursued by Bond simply because of his desire for a PERSONAL revenge. And this is exactly what is unacceptable, and what M also pointed out when she always asked Craig Bond whether his move was personal or official.

To be honest, of course this type of criminal (but not villain!) should have been prosecuted without a doubt, BUT NOT like this, as this person should have faced a judge and the law, not a (licensed to) killer.

Therefore I think, that Bond behaved like an aggressive hamster and not an agent.

WOW! That’s pretty good memory. I barely remember that movie at all. But I remember liking that Timothy Dalton movie better than the other.

Was trying to figure out who that reminded me of.
I think it's Gary Cooperish

Thanks! I'll admit, the truth is, I like Robert Davi a lot, and that's why I was a little biased towards him. I really liked the way he played his role.

To be honest, I didn't like the other one either I think at the time they were trying to change RM's "princess charming" style to a more powerful, cruel and dispassionate agent. But they failed because it required a Craig type character as seen in recent JB movies.

I think TD was completely unfit for the role because he wasn't tough, he was a jerk, and James Bond is not that kind of person. I think that's why they urgently replaced him and gave the role to Brosnan, because on the one hand, he reminded people of Moore's JB character in terms of looks, but especially style. Apart from that, all that was needed was better stories and the series was successful again

I've been watching ICONS UNEARTH: JAMES BOND on Amazon Prime, which is a multipart documentary covering every aspect of the Bond series, talking to the producers, directors and actors etc and all the trials and tribulations and hoops that were jumped through to bring the character to the screen throughout the years.

I'm guessing if you want the full picture of the Bond franchise this is a pretty good documentary to see.
