Possible trade

This is one I have written about before but it seems closer this time. I may be able to trade my 5712 1/an and my 5726 1/a for a 5740. Now that it seems steel nautiluses are going away is this a good idea or stupid?

As much as I like the 5740, I wouldn't do it.

After owning a 5712 1a and now owning a 5740g let me tell you, You will be way happier with the 5740g. The dial is bluer, the weight of the watch is better, and the complication is the best yet on a nautilus. There is a reason you thought to do this… because it’s the right move!

The 5740 is the El Hefe of blue dials. Not just Patek, but in all watch brands.
5712 = dark blue
5711 = better but not blue enough
5811 = great deep blue but uncomfortable watch at 41mm
5711p = great blue but 700k? ummm pass
Skydweller = datejust on steriods
Vacheron = if you like purple
Datejust = umm it’s a datejust
AP= lifeless blue unless it’s the 26239bc in white gold but this also looks purple sometimes

And that’s the run down of the reasons why the 5740 is the best blue dial in the game.

Possible trade

What a complicated (pun intended) choice.

The Ben Franklin on it is a must before you move on the trade. Including tangible and intangible factors.

I'll start with the logical - which way will the cash go on top of the trade? If this is a private deal then maybe less - or is it straight trade?

Next, the cost avoidance model - you will save thousands in the next service cycle (presuming both of yours are within a year of each other).

Last, flexibility - you do give up the ability to switch up your wristwear pattern by losing a white dialed piece. If blue is you then maybe a non-issue.

Me?
Yes I'd do it if one of the two you have is just keeping company with the watchbox most days.

The 5740 is my favorite in the Nautilus line-up. I would do the trade in a heartbeat.

I’d do it but hope the trade and any cash is a fair deal. PM is special and feels great on the wrist. I just did something similar for a 2021 5711/1r. Very happy.

The sum of the two, both money and collection wise, is greater than the one for me. I would keep what you have, enjoy.

If you bought both yours at retail and are now trading without adding cash, you would be making out like a bandit

I'd do the trade unless you love 5712 as much as 5740 in which case I'd only trade 5726 for sth else.

I wouldnt do it personally. The 5712 is such a fun and non-symmetrical layout and you (in addition!!!) have a white dial annual calendar 5726.

IMO you currently have more dial variety in terms of layouts and 2 different color combos at that. Sure the 5740 would be nice, but you'd not be gaining anything. This is one of the cases where the sum of parts is more than the whole

I would trade in some other brands. The watches you have are not really replaceable for a reasonable amount.

For me, I love the annual calendar complication but dislike the thickness of the 5726, 5712 is my favorite but I don't really care for the complication as much. 5740 brings the best of both worlds and has been the one watch I can't stop thinking about after trying it on. I would do the trade personally, and then you can set your PC and enjoy the function everyday. vs having to switch between the two you have. Also Nautilus in gold is just such an amazing combination. I am not a fan of 5811 at all so really this is the grail Nautilus over anything imo.

I would

But, if possible I'd try to keep the 5712. See if you can trade the 5726 + other brands for the 5740. 5740 is incredible.

That's a tough one^^

A few thoughts aside of what other members already said.

If you wear very often the 5712, you may want to check the overweight of the 5740G (comfort), especially if you wear your watch a little loose.

White gold is more shiny, less grey than still, more visible, depending on where/how you wear it.

Of course, the QP complication is revered in the watch world, and this watch is very thin, which is a very appealing (to me) Patek characteristic. Between the 5711 and the 5712. I wonder if the 240 hasn't better finished edges (anglage) than a 5712/1A's.

Will you miss the white 5726? If not, then, I would do the trade (I'm not expert in valuation).

Keep us informed :)

I am debating whether to use different watches in the trade. Like a COMEX and a SAS explorer II and keeping all the nautiluses…or mixing and matching.

Now you are being difficult. I don’t think I’d ever trade a comex or an SAS explorer. Both are relatively quite special indeed.

Do you not have any LB / LV or surplus Daytonas to add in there?

I, too, own 5712 however wanted to add complications simplify my collection. Have decided to trade 5712 with a few rolex plus cash for 5740. No regret. Not sure what you have in your collection, but I'm happy owner of 5740.

I missed this one! The gradient blue on the 5726 is actually pretty decent but in line with a 5711 I feel. Respectable blue dials for sure. I've attached a picture I found on the net since I don't have a 5726 to compare it with. But I think you can see better what I'm talking about when I say the 5740g is the best blue dial.
