The day when there's no more steel Jumbo

Late night chat with watch friends and this topic came up.

Will we see the day when AP stops making steel Jumbo?

Looking at Patek they stopped making steel 5811 - for now. Like Patek, some of the AP models still have high demand particularly for anything Jumbo. Even if it's only precious metals they will be sold before showing up in any boutique. Will that happen? I certainly hope not. At least not until I get my 16202st.

I don't think so. AP is not Patek. For which we likely are all thankful.

I think a 5811 in steel will certainly come back. The Jumbo is an AP icon, it will 100% stay in the catalogue..

The 5811 is a gold version of the steel 5711, correct? So a comeback, if any, wayne the 5711 I believe. Regardless, not sure why they’d make that move at this point given the related release of Cubitus, which will be focus moving forward. AP could certainly take a similar bold action under the new leadership. Heck, they could even release their own awesome rectangular RO from the archives which would be a huge hit.
Time will tell.

Given that the jumbo was a pioneer in luxury SS watches, I don’t think it’s going anywhere.

Remember, nautilus was essentially a copycat for a competitor brand. Not knocking it, but the heritage of the jumbo is vastly superior

Hopefully this doesn't happen before I can ever get one!

Well they did think about discontinuing the entire jumbo line as recently as 2011. But too much hype built up in the last 10 years for the Jumbo so I don’t it makes sense for AP to ever consider getting rid of the jumbo ever again, especially the steel reference

I prefer the jumbo in WG, gives a nice weight and balance to the watch.

That is the one for me, outside of a QP. Everyone else can have the DB and ceramic....I want the WG Jumbo. Sandgold would be pretty marvelous as well.

Couldn’t agree more. One and done. Maybe paired with the WG JM QP. Perfect two AP collection.

Yes 16202BC is so nice compared to the 15202ST weight. Those are the only ones I can compare personally

While that's true, the very important context is it wasn't selling. The demand is very high, so I can't see them doing that, and it will remain as a more 'historique' royal oak.

No question!
Got to see one of these this weekend. So much better for me. The weight, shine, and dial. The st never did it for me and I moved on from it..

The only thing that sucks…getting an allocation is impossible for mortals and grey prices on the white gold jumbo are more than steel QP!

Since I have the wrist for it…I was looking at the WG 41 with the smoke blue dial recently. Only a $20k premium on the grey not counting the sales tax difference.

Agree, the difference in a direct comparison is quite striking, in weight, but also in the shine of WG (or the WG rhodium plating) vs steel.

Huge fan of the 15202PT here.

Plus the 16202OR is divine too. But for now I'll have to rub along with my 16202ST.

The 15202ST vs the 16202BC..... The 16202XT in the green Dial I tried on at G&G in Miami and it was amazing but $160k+ was a no go for me, I will try to wait for an allocation of the 16202BA Smoke Dial

Apparently just before the 40th anniversary back in 2012, the Jumbo was doing so bad they were even considering to stop it.
Nowadays these would seem ludicrous.
If there is one watch that defines AP, it would be the steel Jumbo.
But who knows what will happen in 10/15 years from now...

The green dial on the 15202BA for the hourglass edition was sublime too

One just came for sale and I really thought about buying it. But in real life the green is a very very dark green there is lots of black in the dial

Precious metal jumbo is very nice. It's just hard to swallow the market price of 100k+ for any of them.

Yes the one for $125k posted on March 4th.

I feel like it has to be in the perfect light to really get the green. Have you seen one in the flesh? I would love to know really what the green is like

I wonder if it’s the same Pantone as the 25331BA it seems like it has more black in the 15202 dial and a less lacquered shine or coating
