Perhaps a Seiko Alpinist or Turtle that has been made in Japan (denoted by the ‘J’ at the end of the reference)?

Seiko, so many to choose from but would look at a Turtle.

Seiko, Tissot, and Hamilton come to mind. You might be able to get a Tag Heuer as well.

Depending on their sense of style, a Tissot PRX is pretty nice

Personally I’d go Mido. Grey discounted prices can get you into that range and better quality in my experience than Seiko at similar price points.

If appealing Midos are priced out of the range then I’d look at Hamilton next.

The Hamilton Khaki, PRX and Alpinist are all almost double the stated budget.

For the budget, to suggest a few:
* Seiko 5 (many great choices)
* Seiko Essentials Collection (many great choices for a more classic look)
* Unimatic U1 or U4
* Brew Metric Retro Watch
* Dan Henry Maverick 1972 Chronograph

Congrats to the grad!

Orient divers are well made, substantial, and fit your budget.

Another vote for Mido. I received a Multifort as a gift and I'm very pleased with the quality. The 80 hour power reserve is just excellent.

Depends on the intended use, Lum-Tec makes some nice stuff. I believe $545 is the price for most styles.

Certainly have no quibbles about the suggested models themselves.

I do not know enough to say judging on price alone. Is the graduate outdoorsy, or otherwise?

The other side of the coin is buying a watch at $500 that will cost upwards of that (or more) for an overhaul 10 years hence.

For grads, would a quartz movement be better? I have some that have gone 30 years with only battery replacement costs.

If that's an option, Shinola dropped the Duck on the market - $550 MSRP and a 10% off for email addy.
