Jewelry spend, new to Patek

Hey everyone,

New to the forum and I apologize if this is not the right place to ask.

I was wondering how difficult it would be to get a sport model PP in NYC? I have currently about 70k in spend (20k jewelry, 50k in watches including a sports model rolex, rest misc brands). I plan to buy an engagement ring around $100k, and was wondering if coupled with a 6119/5205 what are my odds of getting a sports model PP? Thanks a ton and looking forward to hear any thoughts/advice.

Cheers!

I don't have much experience outside of the UK, but that kind of jewelry spend would get a sport model (and has) where I've purchased. New York might have more big spenders vs the area of the UK I'm in, this could cause the ceiling to be a bit higher to reach.

If that’s the ring, I can’t wait to see the watch

interesting haha, i visit the UK quite a bit to see my relatives.. it seems rough just based on the talks i had with the manager and my SA in NYC (too many big fish) perhaps it’s time to start anew there, if they don’t take “american foreigners” too harshly, though London may not be any better.

to everyone else, thanks for the kind words, this seems like quite a friendly forum! hopefully can get something nice in the 3 carat range.

cheers!

I would ask the Patek AD directly if they give you credit for the jewelry purchase when you are shopping for a Patek. Many watch ADs that sell jewelry do give you credit for future watch allocation, but it really depends on the AD and their client base. My guess is purchasing a $100k engagement ring at Tiffany may not get you as much credit as purchasing a $100k ring from London Jeweler.

Why are you subjecting yourself to this stupid game? Do the math and it will end up being cheaper just to go with a grey dealer than with a random retailer. It’s soooo dumb.

Unless: 1. You want your name on the papers 2. You want to buy it at retail to sell it to a grey dealer and get 30% to 70% in your bank account.

But, you’ll be black listed from Patek.

Fist world problems, I guess. Good luck.

Just tell your AD what you want, ring, 6119/5205 and a sports piece. Let them give you the eta on everything. These are not rare pieces and they have allocation to sell. If you aren’t impressed go elsewhere, make them earn their sales.

I’ve bought most of my watches grey but wanted to go AD route precisely for the name issue. Never wanted Pateks until seeing them recently. A like-for-like diamond is about $30k cheaper I think from the diamond district? Not too bad of a delta

Good luck with the proposal! For clarification, are you saying you have spent 70k at a PP AD already and plan on spending another 135k this year between your engagement ring and getting yourself a 6119? I would hope that would be enough to get you a sports model. If not, I am glad I don’t live in NYC!

I would have to think it’s in the ballpark.

Only way I would do that is if they will get you the sports watch for your wedding.
I don’t think this is a good plan, I would just buy what you want at the best price you can, including the ring.
And if you’re just working with a sales person and not talking with somebody much higher up then I like the plan even less.
I’ve never understood this name on the papers thing ,I’ve never even looked at them and never will.

If you are only after one or two sports models and have no interest in the 6119/5205, I would recommend going grey. The loss you would take on those watches alone could make up for a significant portion, if not all, of the premium over retail on certain sports models.

Besides, there is still no guarantee you would get an allocation on the sports models you are interested in, some of which might be discontinued, and you might be stuck with watches you don't totally love.

I’ve seen and read stories where folks received a SS sports model as their first purchase while others have spent hundreds of thousands and received nothing!

It all depends on your AD, the marked they’re in (even though now several will send their “hot watches” into other markets, to expand their customer base)

I don’t believe there’s one answer across all ADs, and it all depends on their business model, and ethics as well as how much they like you……. Or not!!!

Make it a 20k diamond and buy the watch grey.

I think a NYC problem is that it may be hard to find a PP dealer that's also a full-service jeweler (I think Wempe and Tiffany are the only ones). You may do better in the suburbs, or even Greenwich, CT.

I’ve just bought, from Tiffany’s, a 1.34ct internally flawless, completely colourless (D) on yellow gold. It cost £44k. Spending 100k on a diamond is going to be something very big!

I’d just ask the AD straight up if you’re going to bundle like that. They can’t guarantee anything but they’d probably nod, which is good enough for court if Patek pulls the storefront.
