Cruise ship Rolex shenanigans…

Folks,

Currently on a Celebrity Cruise in Alaska.

Onboard Jewerly store that sells pre-owned Rolex pieces had a small contest last night.

They brought out a 41mm smooth bezel, oyster bracelet Datejust.

Dial is plain black. Bezel is a ‘wider/thicker bezel (IMO it’s a Datejust 2).

As part of the contest, people had to guess the year of this timepiece.

My wife and I guessed 2010 and 2015. Last night they’ve announced the year of the watch…..hold on to your hats..

1993!

I’m so confused. I thought bigger Datejusts were released in 2009 (as a Datejust II model)?

Am I going crazy? Going to take a pic of the watch and post it when I have cell service at the next port.

I don’t think it’s right…..I feel like calling them out…my wife and I walked away from the contest confused.

Folks, can you please confirm that I’m right!!??! (Or call me crazy).

I’ll also going to ask for paperwork later this evening. It’s pre-owned but I’m not sure if it has paper to back it up.

Thx everyone for your help (or for confirming my insanity)

Take care

Yeah DJ2 came out in 2009. I wonder if it has a random serial that happens to start with "S" and they typed it into Google and came out with 1993.

Cruise ship "AD's" have no clue what they're talking about. On a Disney cruise last year the guy told me the reason they were selling a TT 36mm Datejust for $27,000 was because "Rolex is shutting down their factories". They also had a panda Daytona for $50,000.

Absolutely clueless.

Were there anything DJs before the DJ 2 that were bigger than 36mm?

That’s my ‘million dollar question….

Thx again

Sounds like they’re clueless. The Datejust ll was indeed released in 2009, and was the first 41 mm Datejust. No such model in 1993!
Did anyone win the contest?

Sounds like the cruise dealer is not an informed dealer or worse.

Ask them for the Rolex Moonwatch, bet he will tell you that you’re in luck as they only have one left and pull out a DJ

Most ADs in general seem to have pleasant, albeit clueless, sales reps. Finding the ones that really know their watches seems to be rare.

First, on cruise ships that only sell used Rolex ARE NOT AUTHORIZED ADs, they are greys, and.... imho usually not of high esteem or reputation. If they sell Rolex AND other brands, THEY ARE NOT AUTHORIZED ROLEX DEALERS.

YES, there is a ship with DEDICATED ROLEX STORES THAT ARE ADs, very rare and think only ONE ship has this to date, but you will see they ONLY sell Rolex and will confirm they are authorized by the Rolex factory for selling new timepieces sourced from Rolex directly.

As of June 2025... The cruise ship EXPLORA I, operated by Explora Journeys, is the first and currently only cruise ship to feature an officially authorized Rolex boutique at sea. This boutique, located in the Lobby, is exclusively available to Explora Journeys guests.

As for your guessing date game OP on your cruise, if you expect that watch seller to be honest....
roflol

run away, don't walk. and their pricing is usually CrAzy ToWn.

Our family was on a Disney cruise last year with my brother in law and his family. He hadn't been a big watch guy, but was getting interested in it.

There was an event at a grey onboard that he went to, and we were talking about it. He said they were asking $40k for a Pepsi and it was ridiculous. He said they shouldn't be more than $22-25k from his research.

I told him it was possible it was overpriced because we were on a ship, but asked if the dial was black or blue? He didn't realize what white gold was a thing but I explained that $40k wasn't completely out of range for one. We decided to make a game of going back to check.

We stopped in and I asked to see the white gold Pepsi. The rep said he'd go look, but didn't think they had one. I told him my brother in law had looked at one the prior night. He went out back to grab it, and showed it to me.

Beautiful piece, but wasn't white gold. He actually tried to tell us that we were wrong on the value of stainless vs white gold. I thanked him and we left.

Captive audience + available Rolex = Crazy pricing

Folks,

Finally got my answer….

This Jewerly store is called Effy (seems to be based out of NY).

As mentioned by someone in this thread, they are not an AD. Their pieces are not even CPO and don’t have any papers (besides their internal store certificates).

I did let the SA know that they were wrong (in a nice way). The person did not seem well versed in Rolex watches….so to a degree no fault of their own.

So mystery solved. Now I’m trying to get my free bottle of champagne after this whole ordeal has ended.

Thx everyone for your input.
