Collection within a collection

As I have said many times before, Jaeger-LeCoultre is quite possibly my favourite brand to collect. Seems I can find a good addition to my collection rather easily with them.

Below is what I currently own, I’d say I’m satisfied but I know half of you will want to call me a liar.

This is an amazing vintage collection. Indeed, JLC has a rich history which your collection helps to showcase.

Thank you, guys!

I had the mystery dial (which some also call the Galaxy, I learned) in mind for quite some time. I really wanted that specific dial with the 37 diamonds and the long inscription on the caseback.

Mine also states it’s a D&A case, which I find interesting.

Good question! I may be corrected by more knowledgeable members but I understand reference numbers were not as clearly determined back then as they are now so I cannot say I know one for this watch.

What I can tell you is that it holds the calibre 486, which was also used in this model (not my picture):

In my case, the tonneau shaped movement is put in a rather large metal ring through which the correctors go.

Thank you!

Some of them have had their dials redone, however, I find it interesting that even throughout the ones that have not been touched, the font seems to be different here and there. There is a nice variety.

Hi Carl, great set of watches!

Do you target light colored models, or was JLC of that epoch predominantly light-dialed (disclaimer: I know nothing about vintage JLC ).

Amazing collection would love to see each watch separately, the quarter master must have been epic for its time!

Thank you for showing this superb collection C. It's great to see them all together. I think the Quarter Master is my favourite, but the Futurematic is a close second for the name alone. I wonder what the original advertising looked like for these two.

JLC knows how to design watches - from movements to aesthetics.

Your moonphase is beautiful.

Appreciate the kind words, my friends. I will endeavour to take pictures of the watches separately. The moonphase tends to get eyes drawn to it, I knew for years I would have a complete calendar one day and this particular model has been a coup de coeur of mine for just about as long. The face on the moon is a major plus, in my opinion.

I am glad to see the Quarter Master being liked, my understanding is that I have the third generation, where the case itself is different. Would you believe I very much disliked it when I first saw it? I thought the 24 hour dial did not work at all and made the watch busy to a point where I did not find it beautiful.

Took but a few weeks for my mind to change drastically, and boy am I glad.

Cru Jones, that is an interesting question because in my whole collection, I have but one black dial (and an oxidized green one but that’s beside the point). JLC and LC have indeed made many models in black, I believe it just so happened that I found either good deals or nicer looking watches with lighter faces.

Some top choices there. Love me some vintage JLC. So much charm, most of which lost over the years.

You probably saw this already but here's an interesting article about the Quarter Master being the forerunner of the first astronaut watch, worn by John Glenn.

Thank you for your kind words, guys.

Adam, I remember reading something about it but not this article, it was most interesting indeed.

I suppose it comes with the feature but the only other 24h dial I have owned was the Cosmonaute. Surely, that makes me next in line to be launched into space.

...which begs the question: which watch would you wear if offered a free space flight? I'd probably buy a LeCoultre for the occasion. Omega Speedy would be too obvious.

Jeez, that’s a good one.

I know I would not go for an Omega either. I like it but it’s not my favourite.

Within my collection, it would be the QM, of course. However, if I could borrow that Cosmonaute for the trip, I’d probably prefer it.
