Probably a silly question but should I be able to see an etched crown on the crystal of my newly acquired Explorer II? What is it I need to see the thing?

Should be at the 6 o'clock position. The light and angle needs to be just right to see it. I've read that a laser pointer really lights it up.

At my age, I needed a loupe to see it but it was worth the effort

yes...very difficult to see! as others have mentioned, you need just the right angle and light. a loupe would be very helpful

Got it!

Good old fashioned linen tester magnifier with a glaring light bouncing of the crystal and there it is.

I just point a lamp at it and then the lens and here is what I got.

Oh, it took me a long time to find mine in my 16613. I had to use many different angles, light sources with a magnifying glass. Mine was at the end of the Swiss. Not directly under the 6 or in between the swiss made. Reflect that light close to watch and move around looking for that micro etching. You'll be happy once you finally find it. I was.

Remember that the LEC is engraved in the middle of the crystal. With a loupe, I have to focus on the dial and then slowly back out.

That laser makes the crystal look like the GV only red! Man that would look sweet with a red ceramic bezel!
