GMT Master - Master II - Master IIc
Hello guys!
I have a question that might sound stupid to you but well. Here it is... Why did Rolex change the name of GMT Master I (16750) to GMT Master II (16760) ? I mean there is not a big difference in the look of the watch. And in another hand why didn't they rename the GMT Master II (16710) with the name GMT Master III (116710). I think the watch changed a lot with the thicker case, ceramic bezel, thicker crown... I don't really understand the turning point in renaming a watch. Thank for your answer ;) |

The GMT Master I had the 24 hour hand and the hour hand synchronised, in other words they told the same time when the outer rotating bezel was in the position with the triangular marker at the 12 o'clock position, you found out the time in another time zone by rotating the bezel clockwise or anti-clockwise......the GMT Master II allowed for the hour hand to be independantly moved to show a second timezone without stopping the watch therefore keeping accurate time, it is also possible to track a third time zone by rotating the bezel.......I don't know why it has not evolved into the GMT Master III

I think they wanted to focus on the mechanical aspect of the watch - the GMT IIc is effectively a GMT II in a new outfit. It's like the Submariner, they haven't called it the Submariner II despite the radical cosmetic changes.

The only time that Rolex has designated a watch as a "II" is when the original is still in production..
When the GMT II came out in 1989, the GMT Master was still in production and continued as the 16700 for another 10 years.. (The GMT IIc doesn't exist, it is really only another GMT II) Same for the Explorer II.... The Explorer is still in production. Same for the Yachtmaster II... The Yachtmaster is still in production.. and likewise for the DD II and the DJ II... But further... going to your original question.. the GMT Master 16750 did not become the 16760..... it became the 16700 until discontinued in 1999.. The GMT 16760 was the original GMT II, and it became the 16710, and continues to live as the 116710.

But the DateJust II does not say DateJust II on the dial, isn't that interesting?
Sorry for the crappy pic - cell phone |

WARNING: stupid post about to be... ammm... well... posted....
a bit off topic, so this would also be similar to the sea dweller and the deep sea? not much mechanical difference, just bigger case, etc. so no need to call it sea dweller II? |

Here is an oddity though on the SD... At one time Rolex referred to the SD as either the SD 2000 or the SD 4000, depending on the depth rating.
