investment advice urgently sought
Hi GUYS,
Can you help me out? My brother ,God bless him ,has £10 k sterling which he wants to invest on a watch. His view is the interest he would earn in a bank is pathetic right now so he would rather have a lovely watch ( or watches)on his wrist ,preferably rolexBUT they have to hold value in say 5 years from now. Is this possible? If so what would you recommend he purchase? I have advised against gold or 2 tone also because I dont think it would suit his style but open to any suggestions please. |

Put a few thousand quid in the bank and buy a SS Daytona. Then sell it in 5 years for what he paid for it. Insure it for theft though!

Watches are not investments typically. But if he wants to buy a watch(s) that might hold its value he needs to buy wholesale or at depressed prices a used desirable SS sports model watch.I would say the lower or less expensive model GMT or Submariner will hold up better as opposed to higher end like daytona.

I would say buying a watch would not be the way to make money. Not with that kind of cash... I would say that your best bet is still to invest it in some form of CD, mutual fund, or other cash investment place with lower risk, even though the returns may not be as high...

I think he would be happy just as long as the value did not depreciate. He realises it would not be an investment in the true sense of the word -the price he is paying includes the acceptance of this .Are there any watches out there (perhaps bought preowned ) which would hold value?

Definitely go pre-owned. Most people will say get an ss model, but I think if you go pre-owned you can get just about anything you want. I could be wrong.

watch is not an investment where you expect good financial returns. you can go to business or short term or long term bank placements if what you want is financial returns. but surely among watches Rolex is the right way to go if you want watch with stability and better resale value.lastly you buy watch because you like it and you can afford it.well thats my opinion.

With that scenario, you can't really go wrong getting a SS Daytona. It's the only watch I would suggest if you're buy brand new. Or by pre-owned anything Rolex that he likes.

If he can find an AD willing to do 20% off on new SS model, I don't think he'll lose any money 5 year from now.
