are milgauss gv becoming more common?

interested in views, particularly from uk.

a helpful AD got me a milguass gv within a month for my wife after I asked him nicely - had purchased some other pieces from him beforehand.

today I'm at work and my wife pings me to say theres a brand new gv on display at a high street AD and is available.

I'm already happy with my watches, but my wife is particularly keen that we get his and hers matching (which I find very sweet).

Now when I bought my green sub I was given the whole exclusivity / limited run sales talk and now you see them quite frequently.

When I had previously enquired about the gv I've been told no chance or 5 years, yet I managed to get one ordered within a month, and now they are in shop windows.

Are they really that difficult to buy or are they like buses...

Since I bought my wife one, the gv has really grown on me. I particularly like the subtlety of them for what is actually quite a large watch.

thanks in advance for any advice posted here after.

Ronnie

I'm no expert (so maybe shouldn't be posting!) but believe that they currently sell at 10% over retail on the high-street grey market in London (eg Armour Winston), but are not all that hard to come by grey. Having said that, I've been to 3 ADs recently who hadn't had one in ages - a good few white and black faces but no GVs.

Not much help then.

I know the last two Milgauss GVs have gone to the window of my AD - it seems the supply of them is beginning to match the demand

I was just in my AD, he has a HUGE selection of Rolex and there was a GV right in the case.

Regardless I want one, it is a beautiful watch.

By the way, is there any difference besides the crystal of the GV and the standard black dial Milgauss??

Little bit in the indices, and markings on the dial.

I know the GV is the collector's choice, but I've got the hots for the black dial.

FWIW, I haven't really seen one in the wild lately, so I can't say they're becoming more common.

Here's what I think has happened:

When it was released, watch fans were led to believe (most probably by cunning ADs and other dealers) that the GV was a limited edition model. This meant demand shot up, taking with it, the price. If I'm not wrong, in the early days of its issue, the maximum premium on the GV was 100% (at least it rose that high in S'pore and Malaysia).

To capitalise, ADs then employed "Daytona-like'' tactics, ie they'd keep the GVs hidden from view while starting lengthy waiting lists for "valued'' customers, even though they knew full well that it wasn't a limited edition piece.

The same strategy was used back in 2003 when the Sub LV was released and when everyone was conned into believing that it was also a limited production anniversary model. So it is with the LV that the passage of time has led the market to wise up to the fact that neither it nor the GV are limited edition models. This knowledge, together with the economic crisis of 2008 that hit all luxury goods hard, has caused the GV's ridiculous premium to collapse to near-zero. It's also a quirk of human nature that if something that was thought to be "limited'' in numbers is later proven to be not scarce, demand will drop off drastically and so this also contributed to the premium's collapse.

Whatever the case, ADs can no longer justify concealing the watch in their safes, or charging high premiums, so they've abandoned their (possibly fake) waiting lists, admitted defeat and have been forced to display their stock in order to chalk up sales.

So to answer the original question - short of knowing Rolex's GV production numbers, I don't know if the GV has become more common, but they are definitely more readily available at more reasonable prices because ADs have been forced to jettison a dubious sales ploy that fooled some people some of the time, but not all people all of the time.

Just purchased one here in the US at a solid discount and I had two AD's offering to sell me one.

That being said, and this ties to another thread, the only location I tried that had "no GV available" was the new Rolex store at South Coast Plaza. They didn't have one to sell, and if he "could" find one, maybe I could save on the sales tax (only).

Hope this helps. PM me if you want to know the AD who was wiling to make the deal.

I've yet to see one in an AD in the UK. but they are readily available in the grey dealers in london - although they are still after a premium.

I suspect that any AD should be able to get hold of one at list these days, as they are certainly available.

I got one BNIB still with stickers on etc, for well below list, and I've seen others going for similar money on the pre-owned market.

BTW Whn they first came out I was luke warm to them, esp the second hand, but I really like mine and I would rate it as one of my favourite Rolexes.

GV in UK

I popped into my AD (Farnham, Surrey) the other week and they had one in the Window. It is nowhere near as rare as it once was.

I don't know if they are becoming more common, I'm sure more aren't being made... probably just less people buying anything in general. I was talking with someone higher up in the Rolex hierarchy yesterday and he mentioned in places like the USA business is down 30 - 60% , while in Canada it is steady in most places . Either way, if you can get this watch, get it. I love it. I just wish it got more wrist time!!

Green is good!

This is nearly the whole story. There was a real shortage that stemmed from production problems with the crystal early on. So while there was never an intent for them to be limited, they were for long enough to create a big supply vs. demand delta. Of course we know in the WIS world that delta grows simply because it exists. The above accounting of how the ADs and early adopters used it as a means to capitalize on the issue is one I agree with too. To me, the white one made the most sense (maybe the least popular now anyway) so that's what I bought. Certainly glad I didn't pay $11K for a GV like many folks did at that time.

No difference when people were paying $14k for a $7k SS Daytona. Some people must have a particular item no matter what the price is and they are willing to pay for it.
