It was a GMT

"But by his own account Rodriguez's most magnificent moment came when he lifted off in a helicopter from La Higuera, Bolivia, on October 9, 1967, with Che Guevara's body lashed to the right skid. "On my wrist was his steel Rolex GMT Master with its red-and-blue bezel," he recounted. "In my breast pocket, wrapped in paper from my loose-leaf notebook, was the partially smoked tobacco from his last pipe."

The Rolex special edition on Rolex a few years ago (which I still have) did an article on Che and the Submariner he wore until his death. It was a Sub. Have the article in front of me.

He probably had more than one watch, there's pics of his pal Castro wearing two on the same wrist !!!

I'm prepared to accept the death watch was a GMT as Félix Rodríguez ( the guy that cut his hands off ) spoke of the blue / red bezel.

Some pics & other related stuff here

time in Moscow. The Gold Jub threw me off...I thought it was a oyster SS

It doesn't help that a Watch Time article about the Rolex Submariner references Che Guevarra throughout, even though his photograph in the article shows the GMT.

It was a GMT/Pepsi. Although he did a wear a Sub very early on. Both were given by Castro who gave out many Rolex watches to his higher ups. Felix still has it till this day.

I have a pretty good collection of books on Guevara with lots of photographs from various periods in his life. During the cuban revolution he wears watches with leather bands that are small faced and do not appear to be Subs or GMTs. After the revolution he is often photographed with a nifty dress watch that, again, is not a Sub or a GMT. In the early/mid sixties he is photographed with a GMT. He may have had a SUB, but on the pictures where I can clearly see the bezel, it is a GMT. These are black and white photos and I can't tell if it is a Pepsi bezel or not. In short, Che was a watch guy.

I would not believe some of Melrose's claim as many people have found them not very honest about the items they sell.
The watch time photo and article mentioned/showed a sub but many people have more than one watch and that is not surprising.

I have the same magazine and if you put it under a 10x you will see that it's a GMT II with a black insert, and NOT a S/S Sub.

I wouldn't have been a GMT II. That watch wasn't introduced until the 80's. It would have been a 1675 GMT wouldn't it?

FYI, in the Soderberg film CHE, he at times has both a Submariner and a GMT (looks like pepsi in some shots, but coke in others... hard to see). One on each wrist. It makes sense that he would have a Rolex because you have to remember that back then a Rolex was not as expensive as it is today, even if you take inflation into account. Lots of soldiers in the 60s wore Rolexes because they were extremely reliable and more robust than what other watch companies might have been putting out. If you're Che Guevara and you're in the jungle for a year, you want to have reliability.

In the WatchTime article, you can clearly see he is wearing a GMT although the text for the photo states it's a Submariner.

For what I know he wore a Sub and a GMT.. It could be that if someone passed away they would pass the watch to someone so he would take it to the family of the deceased. So he could at some point be seen wearing two watches.
From what I understand from a reputable source the Che Watch is valued at 1million usd.. If it is ever going to sell no one knows..
