No Second Rolex, I've Decided on a Different Tack . . .

I have owned four different Rolex DJ watches over the past 35 years, one at a time. For the past 22 1/2 years I've owned a TT DJ 16013. (I posted the story here: http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=97061) The 16013 had not been serviced during the past 11 1/2 years, and the last servicing in early '98 was not done at a RSC.

It's currently at the RSC in Pennsylvania where they recommended their basic servicing, including a new crystal, crown and tube. They also recommended new hour hands, a second hand, champagne dial, Jubilee bracelet and two additional links (to match the length of the one currently on it). I initially approved everything but the new bracelet and links for a total of $906. I nixed the new Jubilee bracelet with two additional links for an additional $2,140 ($1,950 + $190).

After my initial approval a couple of weeks ago, I began thinking about acquiring a second Rolex. At first I thought about an Explorer II, but then when I actually began examining all the Rolex watches at my AD, I found myself admiring a new TT DJ and, because of price, began thinking of compromising on a SS Oyster Perpetual with white gold fluted bezel (nice watch). Ultimately, I realized that for 35 years I've had one (at a time) Rolex that I've worn every day. If I get a second Rolex, one's going to end up in its box in a drawer, an expensive drawer decoration. I know there are many "collectors" on this forum, who will say, "Yeah, so?" But, although I'm a collector of firearms and understand the "collector's drive," I'm not a Rolex collector.

So, I decided to put my trusted friend of 22 1/2 years in as close to new condition as the RCS can get it and keep it on my wrist for another 22 1/2 years. However, I'm going to service it a little more often then every 11 years. A couple of days ago I had the AD call the RSC and add the new bracelet and links, i.e., I went with all their recommendations.

The way I ended up looking at it was like this:

To bring my TT DJ 16013 back to new condition with a new TT Jubilee bracelet is costing me $3,297.30, including sales tax out the door. A new TT DJ Model 116233 with two additional links out the door from an AD also including sales tax would cost me $9,677.55. Assuming I could net $1,300 from the sale of my current Rolex (selling price of $2,200 after $900 in servicing) to apply to the purchase of the new 116233, the difference between keeping my friend in as new condition or buying a new 116233 would be $5,080.25. Even if I got an AD to give me a 10% discount on the new 116233, the difference would still be $4,112.50.

I'll post some photos when it gets back from the RSC. My expectations are high since I'm going with the new bracelet.

Like the way you think. Not sure I'd be able to decide between two every day. Looking forward to seeing the renovated piece of art that comes back from the RSC. Cheers, Chris

after such a long loyal service I would hate to let it go. But then if you are not a collector and just want to keep the old one you are saving more than 4k

Good story. I was collecting watches and always seemed to have an itch for another conquest. Something about the new GMT struck me and I had to have one. I could be happy with just this watch and find myself wearing it more than the others. Only time will tell if the itch is really gone or just in hiding. I know I would like the 18 KT YG GMT. Maybe I'll be able to pick up a pre-owned in a few years. Man, that would be sa-weet!

Very good move. I'm looking forward to seeing what a "restored" Rolex, per RSC reccomendation, will look like. I'm hoping it looks better than new!

Will they replace your bracelet with the new style jubilee, which should theoretically stand up better to stretch?

I think that's a sound decision. I look forward to seeing the pics of your restored beauty when you get it back.

No, it will be a brand spanking new "Bracelet – 62523 20mm SS/18K yellow gold Jubilee (455)" per the RSC's written estimate. In fact, the AD told me that the new champagne dial will be just like the one that was on it when I sent it in, except it will be new. It will have the solid gold stick markers like the original and not the wider luminous sticks currently on DJ dials. However, he did note that because they no longer use tritium (or something like that), I might notice that the luminous dots above the solid markers are a little different color than the original dots. Anyway, that's what he says. I hope he's right because I like the solid gold sticks better than the current luminous sticks.

All shall be revealed when it arrives back home.
