When is a rolex considered 'too small' ??

Hi guys,

I tried on a GMT2c at the weekend and the lugs did not 'reach' the top and bottom of my wrist when looking down at the watch (hope this makes sense !!).

Again, when looking down at the watch I could see about 3 links on both the 12 o'clock side and the 6 o'clock side.

Does this mean that a 40mm watch is too small for the size of my wrist?

I hope im being clear !

Thanks

Marcus

Too small or too big is a personal choice. Ive seen 4'11 105 lbs. wearing 52mm and I've seen 6'8 400lbs wearing 34mm. Wear what you like.

If baggy jeans jeans, loose t-shirts, untied shoes and twisted hats are your thing... I'd think you'd want a large watch.

Seriously, it's whatever you like. There are no "rules" on what is a proper watch size for a given wrist.

I have quite a large wrist I wear what I want to wear most times I wear vintage some of those just 30mm.And back in the 1930s 1940s watches were quite small average 30mm and can assure there were some very large wrists about even in those days.

It's too small when you try it on and YOU decide it is and no one else.

When you buy a white Explorer II and you can't really see it under your thick, white wrist hairs - THEN your watch is too small!

I think that there are too many folks that think that a watch should be sized like a t-shirt..

Small, medium, large, and XXX-Large..

It's nonsense...a watch does not need to be properly "proportioned" to somebodies arm...

Here's a new answer for this question:

When you need to add a link or two (like I did).

What's wrong with seeing some links at the top of your wrist, on either side of the case! Some of the bracelets are gorgeous, some are very utilitarian looking. I have a 36mm Omega Railmaster, with a beautiful dark brown croco strap. It looks absolutely gorgeous with the watch, and to my mind is part of the watch. You can see over a quarter inch of the strap on top of my wrist (bottom and top, I know exactly what you mean), and I think it looks great. I'm not really a fan of "bigger is better", and whether it be bracelet or strap, I believe watches should show part of a strap or bracelet. I do think it looks goofy when someone has a watch that extends to both edges of the wrist, and the strap or bracelet is almost invisible when you look at it from the top. To me, that means, "look at me! I'm so cool and insecure all at the same time, I really need this huge watch to bring attention to myself!"
On the other hand, I was at a Rolex AD after work today, looking at Milgauss (40mm) and Air King (34mm). I wanted to see also some 31mm Rolexes. I'm 60 years old, born in 1949, and I can't ever remember any male that I know of - including my Dad and various family friends - ever wearing that small a watch. Yes, the 34mm or so I remember very well (remember also, I'm not only 60 but senile as well). Even the AD said that he would not sell me that watch. It did look like a ladies' watch. Even for someone with a wrist size 6.5 in and under, 34mm is probably the smallest. I have a 7.25in wrist, and think the 34mm looks great.
Just another opinion. Maybe I will see a 7 ft giant wearing a 31mm watch tomorrow!
Who am I to judge!
Cheers,\
Carl

When you say you could see three links on either side, does that mean there were three links laying flat across the top of your wrist, or three including those that started curving down the side of your wrist? How big do your wrists measure?

I would say an Explorer 1 on Nikolai Valuev would be too small. Come to think of it a Deep Sea on his wrist would look too small. Think how much it would cost for a bracelet to fit him!
I worked with a few mates that were quite big, one mate was 7ft 1" and around 280lbs , another 7ft, another that was a spitting image of shrek! (without the colour or ears ) My mate that's 7ft 1" tried on my Omega smp, and it Just fastened using the diving extension opened, and I have 7 3/4" wrists. The smp is a decent sized watch and it looked like a kids watch on his wrist.

The links are not lying flat on my wrist, they were curving down my wrist.....but still very visible.

I totally understand and agree that a watch is very personal etc etc but I was wondering if a watch that showed too many links would be considered as 'technically' too small.

Thanks again

Not that long ago 36mm was a normal to a bigger sized watch .Smaller watches will make a comeback in the next few years . I say no less than 36mm .

I have an AirKing at 34mm, i'm 6'1 and it looks great. I get more compliments on the 14000 AK than I do my 42.5mm Omega Planet Ocean on rubber dive strap.

The perfect Rolex in my opinion is the 36mm Explorer. Nothing better in my opinion. I love all Rolex models but I love the Explorer mark one just a bit more.

Best regards,

Joe

I can easily see two links on each side with my Explorer II, and it's the largest size I'd ever go with. Try either a SS/Plat Yachtmaster or Explorer II white dial, as those two will wear bigger (due to the light faces).
