For a first Pam, would it be better to go with a mechanical or an automatic?

depends on what you are after...
manual winding is the original heritage of PAM...
but Autos are supposed to be the "newer" technology and they charge more for it...

I went 312 as I wanted in house, 1950 case, date...at an aggressive price..that said...I am now looking at a manual historical one...or like 232 or 292 as my next PAM

Hmmmm .... a Tripple One as a first PAM is always a good idea !!

Does winding bother you

If not, choose the piece you want most - Luminor, Radiomir, 1950 ..... the choice is yours.

FWIW - winding the 292 isn't a problem, but when it stops, it kinda is

For your first PAM please consider manual. Historic models like 000, 111, 005 or 112.
Or if you want an automatic, 312 is a GREAT choice. Good luck.

I have both and as stated manual is more DNA oriented.

Manual is great but in all reality you get this inherently built into an auto. I don't keep my 312 on a winder (mainly because it won't fit) and get to wind it every couple of days.

On some of the hand-wounds, 292 for example, you can't stop the second hand at all - its a non-hacking movement.

Non-hacking on eg. the 111 and 113 too.Synchroing the minute and second hand is actually quite easy.I set my watches usualy 1 min ahead.Amazing how much that min helps for arriving on time !!

I flop back and forth. For every day ease of use auto unless 8 day manual. I quickly grow weary of winding my everyday watch constantly that said i own plenty of both. I do prefer manuals and get around the problem by having a large collection but if I had only one then auto.

I wasn't sure about this either, but ended up with a 111. Kind of a nice touch to wind it up when I wear it.
