Looking at a TAG, needing advice
Hello all, first time posting on the forums but i've been lurking for quite some time. I currently own a Rolex Explorer II and a older two-tone Datejust but have been wanting to add another. A local Rolex AD is going out of buisness and is having a big sale so I stopped by yesterday to see if I could find a good deal but the Rolex selection was pretty thin. The salesman wanted to show me TAGs. I had never really looked closely at them but I have admit I really liked a couple of the models, particularly the Grand Carrera Calibre 17RS. It was a little "flashier" or "hipper" than I would normally go for but I still liked it. They had their TAGs marked down 60% and he quoted me a price of $2280 but i'm confident I could get it for $2k including tax. Basically I am wondering what all the TAG enthusiusts think, good deal?

if you feel you're getting a wicked price (a 60% discount sounds very good to me) and you really like it, then buy it. that being said, i'd also visit some of the for sale sections on the various watch fora to see what else $2 grand gets you - after all, the moment you buy it, it's used. for example, you can get a slightly used and in beautiful condition speedy pro for less than $2,000.

Thats the problem, I really dont know what the watch is worth to begin with I do know that most Rolex watches are marked up around 40% from cost so I would assume the TAGs are priced similiar. I guess what i'm asking is If I wanted this particular watch at normal, everyday prices what would i expect to pay? |

I can get 20-30% off TAGs all day long. I don't even look until I can get 40% or more, and no tax.

Overall I agree. But I just sold a Steve McQueen reissue and was suprised it sold fast and for my asking price. Probably due to the constant price increases from Tag Heuer. Well, it works for Rolex.

as someone who, in a former life knew alot about jewelry busn, i can tell you that, no matter what, you are going to take it up the tailfeather on markup when it comes to luxury goods. i dont care if its Tag (which I love), Omega, Rolex, or whathaveyou, and I dont care if you are standing in the factory when they hand it to you...
Watches are -ridiculously- marked up. Like in the 500-1000 % range most of the time (excluding the market on gold and precious stones, assuming they are certified). So, price of love, my friend. Dont let it bother you. Good hunting. |

TAG makes nice watches and if you were able to get it for 60% off BNIB, I would buy it.
resale value after your 60% on the GC 17RS will be good enough to sell it without losing too much money after few years of ownership. |

If you're talking about retail vs. wholesale then you are so off in your numbers it isn't even funny. If you're talking about what it actually costs the watch manufacturer vs. what they cost wholesale then only the watch companies know that answer.

the latter. my point being that there is no way to avoid a steep markup. it's all relative, funny or otherwise, and one should buy what makes ya happy and not worry about how much of a bath you avoided or stepped into.
but perhaps you know more than i (likely, but then this is why i generally avoid sites like this, b/c i can see where the next comment is going to go). |

If you can get it with full warranty from the AD, then I'd say go for it. If warranty is not that important, you may find more of a savings with a nicely kept pre-owned model.

IMO, 40% off is a good deal, but plan on keeping it because as others have said, resale is another story.

I own a GC Chrono with the black dial and love every minute I wear it. I feel Tag did a great job with this watch. If you can score 30-40% off and like the watch...go for it.
