Which Sub should I get?

I'm very close to picking up my first Rolex and want to start my collection off right, with a Sub of some sort. I personally love the Sub ND, however being my first Rolex I kind of want to have the date function. I have a very good relationship with a jeweler who can get gray market Rolex's and will pretty much match or beat any price I find.

I love the 16600 because it looks similar to the ND but still has the date complication.
The 16610LV with a black bezel insert is probably my second favorite because of the maxi dial.
But he has a brand new 16610 for $5,200 usd and I think that is a pretty good price, and am led to believe its too good to pass up.

Do you think I should go for the deal on the regular Sub or get one of the other two that I like probably a little better. Also, what are good starting prices to throw at him to begin negotiating for the other two, both of which he would have to locate and get for me?

Any help is appreciated and would love to get anyone's input!

20% off MSRP brand new (not second hand) is a good deal. I have the sub LV and enjoy it. Some will say you can score up to 30% off MSRP? The best I could ever do was 20% plus an additional $150.00 off SS Rolex watches.

Best discount I've ever seen on a brand new one was 22% off MSRP at a jewelry store that was CLOSING in wichita (Barrier's... a shame). I purchased ONE new Rolex AT MSR however and vowed never to do that again if I can at all avoid it. Had that "new" in the wrapper experience once and now I can say I've been there and done that! Mine was as a matter of fact a 16610LV which was sold soon after.

General rule of thumb with something like a Rolex... If you aren't getting the one you ACTUALLY WANT... Then why bother? Have him find the one you truly desire and enjoy it. Personally, I love the maxi-dial, but would get a 116710 GMT 2 to get all the latest updates or wait for the new sub. The new bracelet alone is worth it to me.

sounds like a very good deal to me.
I'd double check the warranty since you are getting it from a grey dealer if I were you.

Good luck!

Get the one you want, which sounds to me like it should be the SD

davidsw has a 16610lv for 5200 in the for sale section. maybe you should check that one out and then get the black bezel insert for it since that is what you really want an it would be the same price as what you are looking at. Id be sure to get exactly what you truly want and not compromise for something that is not all you are looling for

Seems logical to get the Sub LV and buy a black bezel to swap whenever you like. it will be like having 2 watches, no one will know it's the same watch but you, plus you get the maxi dial, No brainer I would buy the LV DavidSw has for sale V series too....

Can't go wrong with any of these, but the classic 16610 is the best pick imho...

Cheers

I think I am leaning towards the LV and finding a black bezel insert. Are the inserts hard to come by?

They grow on trees. ;-)

Seriously. You will have to buy one on TRF or perhaps your jeweler can get an authentic one. An AD in the US will likely not want to do the job since the black does not officially go with the LV.

The 16610 was my first. It's a classic... I like the SD as well. Still haven't warmed up to the LV, but maybe one of these days...

Really, try them on and see which one calls out to you. Good luck with your decision, and post pics when you make the choice.

I gotta go with the 16610! The icon, soon to be succeeded and pass into legend.
