INDUSTRY NEWS: Planet Ocean Ceramic version

OMEGA's stunning union of ceramics and Liquidmetal®

A world premiere!

October 19, 2009

OMEGA has announced the launch of the Seamaster Planet Ocean Liquidmetal® Limited Edition, the world's first watch to bond ceramics and Liquidmetal®.

Swatch Group researchers collaborating with OMEGA's product development team have created a striking ceramic diving bezel whose numbers and scaling, made of the Liquidmetal® alloy, appear in stunning silvery contrast to the black ceramic background. The colour of the ceramic dial perfectly matches that of the bezel. The result is an aesthetic wonder only made possible by several new and innovative processes.

The remarkable world premiere is being launched in a limited edition of 1948 pieces in honour of the year OMEGA launched its popular Seamaster watch line.

Redefining longevity in the watch industry

The OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Liquidmetal® Limited Edition, which has a stainless steel case and bracelet, is driven by OMEGA's revolutionary Co-Axial calibre 2500. These movements, which have been heralded for their long-term chronometric performance, are perfectly complemented by the ceramic and Liquidmetal® alloy components which are incredibly resistant to corrosion and scratching. The result is pure OMEGA: a design premiere which will retain its appearance indefinitely, blended with innovative Co-Axial technology.

I thought news of the ceramic PO had already been posted a week or so ago...

Nonetheless, beautiful watch. Too bad they didn't include the 8500 movement in the new PO.

I'm more impressed with the laquered dial (like the Ploprof) than the bezel.

I agree, this watch should have had the 8500 in it.

Yeah, but that's how Omega is.... multiple multi limited issues each year.

Agreed, first thing I thought of: why not the 8500 movement?

Looks like they are playing catch up with Rolex on ceramic bezels.

It is a stunning looking watch however.

I am thinking that the 8500 will be in the final version.

We know Omega likes to produce Limited Edition, so they are trying to flip these at a premium and the 8500 will eventually be on a permanent model. So people will shell out money first and then shell out more for the 8500. You don't want to release the best first, like Rolex deciding to wait on the SS Submariner as their last installment of the Subs.

Catch up with Rolex or not.....this is a better bezel, I think they wanted to wait and perfect something first.

I wonder if they could make that bezel in orange? Probably not. It would have been about perfect with an 8500 in it.

I think I read that in the UK it will be in the £ 3,500 range - pretty good when compared to Rolex prices.

Too bad is right....the 8500 would have been better.

8500 would make sense and why make this limited I wonder? Just an intro to the market I guess to test the waters?

Is anyone got new PO ceramic already? and whats the difference between 2500 movement and 8500? It seems like all new Co-Axial PO going with 2500 movement right now. So whats so special about 8500?
As far as i know ceramic bezel (like for rolex gmt2c) can be broken with strong impact with something (am i right there? ) And how about that new metal liquid ceramic? Is it less sturdy than usual steel?

Any pricing information available? I have been waiting to pull the trigger on a standard PO, but after seeing this limited edition, WOW.
