Crown maintenance

lately, i am hearing some crackling sounds when i try to screw the crown back in after winding my 183. this bothers me as i am thinking i should not be hearing anything or having a bit of resistance or friction when screwing the crown back in. do any of you experience something similar? could something like a WD 40 or some other lubricant be used to help with this problem? or should i take the watch to the AD be looked at?

thx for your thoughts/experiences on this.

Not sure if its the same mechanism as my 292, which has done the same thing from new.

It simply sounded to me like the spring that pushes the crown out, turning as its compressed.

Don't carry out any more winding. The threads need a special dry lubricant. An AD can take care of that in a few minutes while you wait.

JJ's right WD40 and watches don't usually go too well Just tried my 292 and sometimes the spring makes a slight noise when it is compressed as you tighten the crown.

Resolution?!

Fellow paneristi's. Here is the update: i work in midtown in NYC so i was able to swing by the Panerai boutique as well as the Tourneau stores that are within 3 minutes of the boutique. As i've informed you, I've been hearing some crackling sounds and a little bit of friction when i am screwing the crown back in after winding my watch (PAM 183). After describing the issue, here is what happened:
1. Panerai boutique - listened and looked at the watch, and then recommended to send to the service center. no information was provided to me whether it's a common occurrence, or whether others have issues similar like this etc. friendly - yes, but not very helpful other than recommending to send the watch for service.
2. a) Tourneau (madison avenue store ) - i've asked to have a consulation with the watchmaker. The watchmaker unscrewed and screwed the crown back and then quickly informed me that this issue is an OK issue, nothing to worry about. i pressed and said if the service is necessary at all - the answer is "no, i would not do it as it's a normal occurence"
b) being paranoid and all, plus being next to the flagship Tourneau 3 streets away, i also went to the Tourneau on 57th street for second opinion. I am happy to report the same result - it's a normal issue, nothing to worry about. i was told that "it's a manual watch, and hence the crown is connected to the spring that winds the watch, and hence the crown can make sounds like this".

anyway, i feel relieved albeit i still don't think that a $5,900 list price watch should be making any crackling sounds or should not have any friction.

i thought i'd post this long winded reply and hope it helps someone in a similar situation.

Excellent. Glad you've managed to turn it from a niggle to a "design feature" in your mind as you can now enjoy the watch fully again
