Best pen for the money?
I have always liked nice pens. I guess for the same reason I like nice watches......
Im looking to buy a nice pen in the $100 range. I know this doesnt come close to a Mont Blanc, but im sure I can get a nice one in that range. What would you recommend? |

There are so many different ones available in that price range it is best to go and just try several out to see what you like best, but if you really want a Mont Blanc, they start for just a little more than that or consider pre-owned, I have seen some nice ones around 75 up.
Here is a link to a internet pen http://www.cajunpen.com/Pens-Under-100_c_7.htmlshop

You can usually find a Montblanc 144 for around $150 - 250 if you look around. It is a great pen. Also the Pelikan M150 and M200 are great pens for a great price. The nibs are not as nice as a Montblanc or the higher end Pelikans but they are still great writers and a plunger fill so you can go with bottled ink.
Montblanc would probably have a good resale value in case you decide to trade up to a more expensive model. Welcome to the forum. ![]()

Dustin, there are a lot of good writing options for less than a hundred dollars. You can check out some of the recommendations here. Or, you can go beyond, to the "off brand" pens. I have a couple from Levengers that really work well for a day to day writing instrument.

Dustin, there are a lot of good choices out there but I would look in your area for a dealer so you can go in and try them out first before buying!!!

That Waterman Phileas is hard to beat for the 40 - 60 $ you will invest in it. It is one of the most surprising in my collection. Writes as well as my $2000.00 pen! Sheesh!

You could also go vintage!
Don't worry about reliablility as those old pens were built to last. One of my everyday writers is 83 years old! There are many sellers on line that are trustworthy and sell nice affordable pens. Here is one who comes to mind who services the pens before sale. I found a lovely of burgundy English Parker with box, fine/medium 14k nib for $100 (7th Down) http://www.rosspens.com/parker.htm Those old parkers are lovely writers and this has the bullet proof aeromatic filling system! Then with the same seller a whole bunch of excellent Sheaffers (I am sure Richard will attest to the writing experience those give) at well under $100, you would have a great pen and enough left over for a couple of bottles of ink! http://www.rosspens.com/sheaffer_pens.htm There really is something writing with a vintage pen! |

Tombow make some really fine pens, most around $40. They are the best writing pens out there. They aren't as ornate as Cartier or Montblac, but definately hold a smoother line, especially in the rollerball model.

For 100$ the pen you want is Lamy 2000
I am a pen collector and only starting my road with watches and Rolexes. Lamy 2000 cost 89$ and for that you get a German made pen with a butter smooth 14K solid gold nib with a piston filler. I own this pen and bought it only a month ago and it turned already to one of my favorite pens. Pelikan M200 is also a nice pen but in my experience the nib isnt as good s the Lamy and its a steel nib and not gold. If you want any fountain pen advices dont hesitate to PM me. |

In thinking about this, there is honestly no "best pen for the money".
The best pen at any price is the one that thrills you. Be sure and spend what ever it takes to give you that thrill. You will never be sorry.

I am rather fond of the Fisher AG-7, the model that went to the moon. Sort of goes well with a Speedmaster Pro or a GMT.
