Sorry, Nat

Things got heated on the 'sharp edges' thread. I got caught up in highlighting the d***head rather than thinking about how the guy who does not know me personally would perceive it. Sorry about that. Rest assured, I was not being jim crow, but simply a smartass.

And - it is absolutely terrible when people die as a result of ignorance - once again, I AM VERY SORRY ABOUT YOUR FRIEND. Losing people before their time is a familiar concept to me as well.

So - who the F nominated me to be the arsehole highlighter - I don't know. I responded the same way in one of the earlier threads, where the 'offender' comes in with sentence structure/punctuation which give you a migraine, spelling of someone who should use a crayon to sign his name, plus with an ulterior motive of being here to begin with (but that's a different story). Worst of all - this was clearly NOT a case of not knowing the language well enough, but of carelessness and ignorance.

Hope we don't lose you, at least not permanently. Nat - you're a good dude and TRF is a good place. Good match

Greg, your one of the classiest guys here. Your apology like that shows part of the reason why.

I, too, have posted sh*t that sounded funnier, or innocent at least, in my head than it read on the screen, especially if the recipient doesn't realize I'm typing with a big ol' sh*t-eatin' grin on my sorry mug.
I have been known to do a few mea culpas by PM, as well.

I think Nat will probably see this for what it is - nuthin' to get too riled up over.

I think we've all been there at one time or another. It's an internet forum, and things like tone and intent are sometimes hard to convey in a written message. I still don't know where that thread went bad, but Nat's a good guy. I hope he comes back soon.

I'm as confused as everyone... I must have missed the contrversial part of the thread, luckily!
I always say that you can't see sarcasm, or a smile (even with the emoticons) via email or posting.
I hope no feelings were permanently hurt and the Forum continues to self police the Trolls that come to "play" every now and then. I guess when all the other places on the interent fill up, they like to come here and try to cause trouble.

So far, I have found TRF to be above most of the internet BS and it's the only place that I have felt good about posting and joining in the quality (and sometimes goofy) discussions.

Hope all ends well and we take it for what it is... a place to talk about and enjoy Rolexes!

-Pete

Dang... Recent development - seems like the OP from those threads was an offender himself. Sucks we have to lose good people because of trolls (and my impulsive nature).

Greg, do not blame yourself, we're all grown ups here, (well, except for Kyle ) we make our own decisions and accept the consequences for them. He, like all of us, had a choice to leave things alone and chose not to. So.....

P.S. (That was sure not meant to be a Dis against Kyle, he's more mature then most of us on here! )

These Trolls feed on the emotional response they can elicit from the decent likes of Nat and all.

It must be difficult not to get suckered into these goadings, it's just a shame that they do.

Greg, please don't beat yourself up! I followed that thread yesterday, and thought that you did everything humanly possible to make things right.

By the way, I always enjoy reading your posts!

Thanks, guys - sad truth is, I showed no class yesterday whatsoever. I should have known better. I let that arse Tyrone get me down to his level, and typically I have more sense than that. Not yesterday, apparently.

Greg - thank you. (and all the others who replied)

I drove 350 miles today and had lots of time to reflect.

What drove me ballistic yesterday was the feeling that I was the only member who saw the tone of Tyrone's posts as completely intolerable.

There were several replies which seemed to view his rascist mockery as funny, and played along.

Such demeaning stereotypes are a form of "Dehumanizing" - rendering the target group as less than a person - and therefore legitimizing sub-human treatment.

The depictions of Steppin Fetchit, Sambo, Mammy and Aunt Jemima - and the chicken eating jive talking "Yo Momma" character Tyrone brought yesterday - all of these reinforce and give continued life to a societal stigma which hurts us all.

And the end result of dehumanization - the logical and tragic truth - is that people get hurt, and people die. Whenever any person is considered less than another, it is that much easier to treat them that way.

Whenever we fail to stand up to such degrading language and behaviour, we give longer life and continued strength to the worst of human behavior.

Sorry for the rant, but I feel very strongly about this.

Nat - you're 100% right. I didn't agree with Tyrone's ramblings, I simply wanted to highlight the idiocy which he represented, and came across as condoning of his behavior. Not so at all, believe me.

Glad to see you back, mate!

Greg,
I can't begin to count the number of times that I've gotten myself cross-ways with someone over a written email. Things lose context when people can't hear the inflection of the voice or language of the body. I know first-hand that you are a class guy and your OP here further proves that. That thread yesterday was crazy (I just looked it over this afternoon and still don't completely understand what went on).

Now for a watch story (since that is really what we're all here for). I went to set my JLC Master Reserve de Marche last night thinking I'd wear it with a grown-up Zegna suit today. As I moved the time clockwise to do the final date adjustment, the crown started moving freely and no longer adjusted the watch hands. The thing would adjust counterclockwise, but felt like it was "unscrewing itself" in the CW direction. I immediately got that brick in the stomach feeling.

Now for the glass half full part of the story....

I pulled my papers and saw that my purchase date from an AD was April 8, 2008. If you're going to have this kind of problem, then good to have it just under that 2 year warranty wire!!! So, I'll send the watch to Ft. Worth for a warranty repair and request a regulation since it's always run a little slow. For the cost of registered mail (a lesson I learned on TRF from you!) I'll get a full inspection, regulation, basic service, and crown repair and we can restart that damn 5 year clock. In the mean time, I've got my Rolex and that nearly new PAM you set me up with to keep my wrist happy.

Hey Chris!

Glad that JLC was under warranty - their service is pricey! Still, I think the 104 will look good with the Zegna as well...

As far as that thread, many responses were deleted by the mods, and I think it is better that way.

How are things in Tennessee, my friend?

I do like my Zegna clothing...only shirts (& a tie) for me, but at some point I just need to go get a single breasted suit.
Nice stuff!

Things here are pretty good. We managed to dodge the nastiest parts of the weather that everyone else seems to be getting hammered with. Hope things are well in Cincinnati. We're looking forward to being up there next month.

Vic,
I sprung for a couple of their made-to-measure suits a few years ago. Was a little bit of a stretch at the time, but they both still wear just like the day I got them so I guess you really do get what you pay for. The local guys quit carrying the line recently, so I'm glad I got them when I did. The sad thing is, I now pick my wardrobe for the day based on what watch I want to wear. Buying the PAM from Greg and having all of those strap options just makes it worse.....

Does this qualify as my first thread hi-jack?

I had to laugh when I saw this. I plan the next days ensemble by getting the watch ready the night before. I would not admit this any where other than on the forum here. Boy are we ever sick !
