Self winding mechanical watch problem

Okay, so I recently got this self winding mechanical watch from China.. it's the first watch I've had that hasn't been quartz.

The problem is - I can't get it to work. I initially wound it up and it started ticking away quite happily, but it then stopped altogether. I pulled out the crown and adjusted the time, and it began moving again for a moment - and then stopped again. I adjusted the time again, and it started again. This continued for a while, until the watch just stopped moving altogether. No amount of winding does anything about this, but shaking it from side to side for a while makes the mechanism inside move (as seen from the back) but the hands remain stationary. Sometimes the second hand "vibrates" forwards and backwards for a second or so.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong or how I can get it moving again?

I am sorry to hear about the problem. Can you return it? You are not doing anything wrong, either it wont hold a wind or it is simply defective.

Good luck.

Is it a counterfeit Fauxlex?

sounds like you'll need a watchmaker - but i doubt it's worth the trouble, unless it's a seagull or one of the better chinese watches - but if that was the case it would probably work.

I would notify the manufacturer immediately. I know the Chinese are relentless in their pursuit of absolutely defect, lead and radiation free products!

PS- Good luck!

This is your first post on TRF? You joined a Rolex forum to see if we have any advice about a cheap watch?

You will find that we are not snobs here and have a lot of love for all kinds of watches from Seiko, Citizen and even Casio. We will give you the best advice we can and try to help. But you will find that we have no love for knock offs.

I wish you well.

No activity in 3 days, since he joined.

ASSUMED CONCLUSION: He bought a mechanical Chinese Fauxlex, it broke, he googled rolex forum, and found us. He then probably realized that we're not into counterfeits here and hasn't returned.

I know what happens when I "ass-u-me," but absent a follow-up from Nepunet...

It's possible that he bought a watch on flea bay from China that isn't a Folex. It could be any brand for all we know. He doesn't state the brand name, or if it's new, used, or a vintage. I would recommend that any watch that will run for a bit, then start and stop, may just need a cleaning. Again, he doesn't really provide much information.

If it was a counterfeit Fauxlex wouldn't that make it a fake fake?

I ended up replacing it with a battery powered Seiko watch. And no, I didn't google Rolex forums, I googled something along the lines of "self winding mechanical watch stopped" and there aren't many watch-enthuasiast forums out there.

The watch I bought was brand new, and it wasn't an imitation - I can't find the same model, but it looked a bit like this one.

Only posting this message to restore my pride :P
