Why do you think Rolex would wanna ditch 'cobalt' blue and go with the smurf blue?

Just was wondering, why would Rolex want to ditch that 'cobalt' blue seen on the 16613 and go with the 'smurf' blue? Would you do that as a manufacturer? From an aesthetique point of view, the 'cobalt' blue looks way better than the 'smurf' blue seen on the WG Sub and TT Sub Ceramic. From a technical stand point. Why do you think Rolex wanna do that?

Who knows? I do not like the new 'Smurf' blue as it looks like plastic blue to me.

Well over the years there have been a few colour changes mainly then when Rolex was using different dial manufactures.Same for fonts there have been subtle changes but in reality Rolex watches in general have changed very little over the last 20 odd years.

I think it must be to do with the shade of the ceramic. It all has to match up, and there would have been no way to get the same shade of deep blue that they had on the aluminium inserts on the ceramic ones. I think it was an unfortunate by-product of progress

Another thought the cobalt blue was a very difficult color to produce and was subject to fading when in the presence of even the slightest amount of moisture. Usually turning gray or even a yellow green. I used to have a dial refinishing company that got there paint from Rolex and had nothing but problems with the cobalt blue although I am not fond of the new color it is probably a more stable color IMO. I think Rolex just wants to keep us guessing!

If you look at the LV, there are different shades to that green bezel. Same production era, same watch, but they still couldn't decide on the shade they wanted!

FWIW, I prefer the bluesy blue, but wouldn't mind the smurf on me.

That's exactly the same thing I was trying to tell my friend who'se gonna get a TT Sub.

I think it cost much less to replace an aluminium insert than a ceramic bezel.

imo - coblat blue looks fine against the gold and SS colour combo while the smurf blue looks fine against the full WG colour... I think colbat blue would look "funny" against full WG colour....

My guess is that the cobalt looked "off" in contrast to the ceramic so they chose something that better matches the ceramic bezel. Or Rolex wanted to be different because many watches started using cobalt dials (have a Skagen in Cobalt blue :)

x2. too much bling with cobalt blue and WG. Makes it look cheap as well.

drooling on either the bluesy or the smurfy...
but going back to your question, i think most have answered it already (dunno though if its the REAL answer but would have said the same) -- smurfy would match the ceramic better than the bluesy...

I think they wanted to modernize

The older blue is kind of 1980. I think the new blue is classier.

I have to say that I prefer the Cobalt blue.

The theory about getting the new blue to match to something else sounds very possible to me - why else change the "Sea blue" on a Sub to what looks like a lighter "Sky blue"?

The new Blue matches the Ceramic bezel material.. Looks new and rarely found on other watches brands.. And difficult to produce on fakes !!! Which makes the new Blue SUB unique..
For all who didn't see it in real,, please don't judge this color on your LCD screens.. Coz it's a beautiful blue.

I love the blue WG blue Sub. Shares the "holy grail" spot along with a meteorite-dial Daytona.

This article has nice side by side shots of cobalt and smurf blue: Rolex Submariner 16613 vs. the Rolex Submariner 116613

Nice pics of the new WG version can be seen in this article: Review of the Rolex Submariner 116619

I've noticed the cobalt blue is sought after while many are steering away from the 'smurf' blue. It's easier to sell a 18K/SS cobalt blue Submariner than it is the new ceramic smurf. Not even sure why they went with the new blue. I sure hope they find a way to bring in a darker blue now that Rolex has turned to ceramic. I understand the ceramic doesn't fade and is alot more scratch resistant. But the smurf color is not a sale-able color.
