Cap of MB FP or RB when you use the pen is...

not on the rear of the pen. Although in pictures it's always on the rear end of the pen it should not be there in real life... checked this with Montblanc. Only ballpoint has it there since it's a twist mechanism. Guess this is no news for many experienced members on the forum.

Both my FP and RB 'posts' the cap on the back and stays quite securely.

I wanted to check this with Montblanc as i came across (probably on this forum) a comment about the cap tear/wear. It was also mentioned that a Montblanc sales person had been educated to never post it on the pen when selling the pen. I am not sure if this is specific to some MB models only. I agree that the pen looks great with the cap posted, it's just not designed for that.

Of course it's designed for it. Maybe a salesman won't do it to avoid scuffing an as-yet unsold pen, but I've been doing it for years, with zero adverse effect on the pen.

Here's the reply from Montblanc --

Thank you for your email. We will recommend you not to put the cap on the
pen while writing.

I always put the cap on the tail when I'm writing...it feels like the weight is more appropriately distributed to me. Granted, after ~8 years of daily use the tail does show a little scuffing- but what the hell...it's a well used (and appreciated) item!

Posting a cap on the end of a fountain pen is purely up to personal choice. It does not necessarily damage the pen or the cap. It MAY leave scuff-marks, but this does not mean that it damages the pen's ability to write or cap securely.

I personally don't post my caps because sometimes it causes an annoying weight-imbalance in my hands and some caps don't post as securely as others. Some pens have barrels which were specifically shaped or designed to hold a posted cap. I can list the Montblanc Mozart and the Cross Metropolis as examples of this.

How does Pelikan Souvern cap post?
I noticed that they have threaded cap which means they will not have any inner cap that will click to post.

Each to their own since you own the MontBlanc pen but I am not going to post the cap on the pen body because it is not recommended.....

I'm going to go out on a limb and recommend you don't post the cap of your pen. That said, people have been posting the caps as long as pens have had caps, and it does not damage the pen. For me, a longer pen is better balanced, so I post the cap. YMMV.

I "post" some of my FPs and others I do not. It has to do with your preference on each pen you own.

My MB 149s mostly go unposted as the lesser ones post well. Most of the time it has to do with the balance of the pen.

I only post the pens when the cap can be securely posted, e.g. Marcel Proust, Boheme and the 100th historical. 146, 149's no way will I post.

I agree with Kai.

Remember there are some fountain pens which actually have a threaded section at the end of the pen to accommodate the posting of the cap on the end of the pen very securely.

Accordingly, if Montblanc has threaded the end of the pen then in those cases it could hardly be said that it was not the intention of Montblanc to have the cap posted there while the pen is in use.

On the other hand for my 149 and 146 I know that to post the cap will create scratch marks on the end of the pen and also just doesn't feel balanced to me.

Naturally this is all a matter of personal taste and preference.

Just like the way everyone holds a pen. I'm sure it would be interesting to see the different way people hold their pens, there would be quite a lot of variations.

From what I have been reading I guess it's just a matter of personal choice.....
