The instruction booklet that came with my Chopin suggests using tap water. I tried it and it works fine. The biggest issue is getting all the water out, otherwise it'll dilute the ink. I just ran a gentle stream though the nib until it ran clear. Pretty easy, really.

Yes, you can. Richard (Bisquitlips) is a great guy to ask for recommendations on different kinds of inks based on the type of writing you want to do. Give him a holler.

This is the first time I ever met someone who was this worried about a fountain pen before!
1. Spit out all the old ink. Into the sink. Into the grass. Into the original bottle. It doesn't matter where. Fountain pen ink is mostly water. 2. Flush the pen. Fill and empty repeatedly with clear, cold tapwater until the water comes out as clear as when it went in. THIS IS NOT ALWAYS POSSIBLE. If it's as clear as you can get it and it won't get any clearer...that's clean enough. 3. Shake pen dry. 4. Refill with ink of your choice. BE SURE TO STICK TO FOUNTAIN PEN INKS. No Indian Ink, Chinese Ink, Iron Gall Ink, Calligraphy Ink, Powdered Inks or paint! They will clog your pen and turn it into a piece of art rather than a fountain pen, since once that stuff's in there, that's basically all it will be. 5. Write. |

If I recall correctly, the 146 was a piston-filler. |

I wouldn't worry too much about getting the ink out. Even if it's old. MB pens are well made. Just flush it out as in the video you posted and then put a couple of paper towels in a glass and turn the pen nib down in it. Leave it over night. This will allow the towels to draw out the remainder of the water / ink.
You should be ready to go with a new fill of ink in the morning.
