I'm a big guy & I've had more than my share of fisticuffs over the years, but if the mugger had a gun or a knife I'd hand my Rolex over in a second......
especially if my family was with me.

FFS it's a watch not your kids we're talking about.....
& I've gotta say I'm disappointed by all these "I always have one hand on my g*n" type statements.

..... & I'm happy that I live in England.

Start with the arms, they're hairy enough...use the chest as a last resort!

I try to not flash it much, but if I was mugged and depending on the circumstances I might give it to him or I might not. If he's armed with anything more than a knife, it's his, if not then their might be a bit of a fuss. I haven't used any Taekwondo in quite some time and I doubt I remember it so I'd be prudent.

But, here in Southern Spain I would never have to worry about that, I think the only time I would worry is if I went back to visit my dad in Hartford CT, and there my dad and I go around together and he has a concealed carry permit. In downtown Hartford I wouldn't wear my Rolex out the front door unless I was carrying.

For what it's worth, I'd imagine legal fees would be several thousand dollars -- even in a justifiable homicide -- if you were to kill a robber in self defense.

However, I would not give it up.

ABSOLUTELY

I think it is in modern day culture to say "you better not" or "whup his ass" or "get my massive pistol" - but ultimately, you're as likely to end up dead or in hospital as the offender is. Would you risk your life if someone tried to steal your TV at gunpoint? You would just claim on the insurance (I would hope!)

Difference in cultures I guess in some cases in the US vs the UK (where guns arent legalised)

I'm 61 now, couldn't imagine not making it past 71 and not seeing the grand kids growing up for something as insignificant in the big scheme of things as a wrist watch.

Chance?

If there's a knife involved I'd try to kick some ass, when there's a gun I'll just give it up.

Guns outrun fist, nobody can outsmart a bullit. Even with a vest it'll take you down.

Well the bottom line is this. If you try to take anything of mine by force, wallet, cell phone, watch, car, then I view you as an immediate and lethal threat. In the state of Florida, the law views you as one too. I can very reasonably be in fear for my own safety or those around me.

The only way to deal with a lethal threat is with appropriate force.

I dont want to kill a man over a watch or my wallet, but I will do what I can to make sure he does not kill ME for those things either.

That sounds harsh I know, but the world is harsh at times.

I hope it never comes down to that, if it does I am ready mentally and with my equipment. I have gone thirty one years without having such a thing occur. By staying in the nice parts of town and not drawing attention to yourself you reduce your risk dramatically. If I HAVE to go to or through a bad part of the city I cover up my jewelry and get out of the area as fast as I can. Simple as that. If all else fails and they target me, they picked the wrong guy.

well no punk ASS POS is gonna point anything at me and take anything of mine... I will protect it with my life ....you gotta stand up for your self and not get sodomized by anyone ....be a man for once ...you want my watch, you gotta pull the trigger or shove that blade through my heart.... I am gonna be dead BUT you are gonna rot in jail for the rest of your even though I'll be dead, I am gonna leave you unworthy of this life .... so like George Bush said :"Bring it ON!!!"

As I hand it over... I would say "Do you really think it is real? wow I at least fooled someone. go ahead take the watch, but I don't think the pawn shop will give you more than ten bucks for it"
---------
If someone pulled a gun or knife on me. I would do the international sign for robbery. Raise both my hand high in the sky-- hoping someone sees it and calls for help.

I don't know who imagines some cities are some kind of crime free Utopia.....THEY DO NOT EXIST ANYMORE in my experience.....it is just the same as with all cities around the world....there are safer areas than others........that DOES NOT preclude something bad happening in a safe area!!!!!!....they are just relatively safer than the other places.

Find out where the no-go places are as soon as you arrive.....if not before!

If i am not 100% sure of the safety of the environment i will be moving in, then i leave ALL my valuables at home........which is 99.9% of the time!!!!!

THE BEST WAY TO DEAL WITH IT ......IS TO NOT HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT AT ALL!!!!!!

The safes in hotels are often not insured for high value items......check it out.
The room safes usually have an over-ride code for employees/managers.I don't even want to risk that.

.....BUT.....if it does happen co-operate 100%....its only a watch!!!!!

I know a person who unfortunately had THEIR OWN weapon used against them!!!
This is the real world...not a movie!!!!!

IMO..... it is just not worth it....Just my 2c

Its hard to say what one would do in a given situation until it actually happens to you, I carry a weapon and would not hesitate to use it, but if it came down to losing a watch or my life I would gladly give up my watch...

Seriously folks, it's just a damn watch!

Promoting countermeasures (guns, or rib ticklers) is just plain stupid, even from a LEO!

I do like the run like hell response!

it would depend on the situation. more than likely i would hand it over. however, you people who assume your insurance would cover it, i used to be a public adjuster and you better double check your homeowners policies. you MAY need a specific rider to cover a high dollar jewelry item... most jewelry and art, just like cash is only covered to a certain specified amount.
