Obvious pandering!!

Is it wrong to try and curry favor w/ the judge? Don't know but I think I have a couple good shots anyway. Turn back now if you have any problem w/ silver OR gold. Thanks for the generous offer. RS

Thanks Chris, that's a reverse proof in the last couple. Hard to tell when so close. Maybe we need a coin sub-sub forum. RS

Thanks, Chris, for the opportunity. The desk photos that were posted were really great. It's nice to peek inside the world of others.

Here's the nib from my Pelikan Demonstrator. The background is a copy of the note left by Belmore Brown, June 28, 1910. It marks the spot where, in 1906, the "dishonorable Dr. Cook" took the photo of his claimed summit of Mt. McKinley. The location is known as "Fake Peak" and at 5386 ft / 1641 m, is a far cry from McKinley's (now known as Denali) 20,320 ft / 6193 m. The rolled up note survived intact beneath a rock cairn and was found by a Boston Museum of Science expedition in 1956!

There is a quite interesting book detailing Dr. Frederick A. Cook's attempt to become an American hero titled, "The Dishonorable Dr. Cook, Debunking the Notorious Mt. McKinley Hoax" by Bradford Washburn and Peter Cherici. It's published by The Mountaineers Books.

While the idea of a contest is a good one, if a person possesses neither a good camera nor good photography skills, there is no chance of winning. Why not consider a contest judged on composing or creating something - using any criterion other than a photograph? Just something to think about . . .

I hope I'm not too late! I have a MB No. 74 FP that my grandfather has bought from Hong Kong, so I'm the 3rd generation to have it. I also have a BP that my dad did not use so he gave it to me.

I love the glare of the BP pen too:

Winner of the second of seven Oriental pen rugs is:

Jim - JimC

for best macro with creative background (and story)

" Here's the nib from my Pelikan Demonstrator. The background is a copy of the note left by Belmore Brown, June 28, 1910. It marks the spot where, in 1906, the "dishonorable Dr. Cook" took the photo of his claimed summit of Mt. McKinley. Honorable mention for BEST BRIBE ATTEMPT:

Robert - R S

Thanks to everyone for superb macro shots...next giveaway starts Friday night for this Urumchi pen rug from China:

Thank you!

Thanks and kudos to everyone! I really enjoy seeing all those great shots. This one offered some super macros of some fine writing instruments.

Really have to extend a special thank you to Chris. Pretty special for the idea and his Giveaways. He's the real star here! Really one of the great folks that makes TRF a special place. I'm sure glad to be a part of this community with fine folks like him.

For those who might be curious, here is the entire note. I liked how Belmore Browne went in to detail of the title of the book, but more so the plate description to make sure everyone would know the exact photo that debunked Dr. Cook's claim. Amazing it survived in the wild for 46 years before being discovered.

Thanks for your comments, Dave. I really think you will enjoy the book. Not only is the story interesting, the printing is very good and there are some great plates.

Thanks, Ian! It did turn a bit cooler the past couple of days. It's down to 9F / -13C, and might get colder. We had a small blizzard and just got in from running the snowblower. Had a drift that was 3+ feet deep all across the driveway. The good ol' Honda put it in its place, though.
