Okay, so I am ordering something(s) from the "hospital"...
when I get em, what is the first thing to do for "inspection" of the FPs.
Actually, I am ordering several mfg's; MB, LAMY, a Pelikan and Nakima/Pilot? Do FPs have some "break-in" practice also? Thanks, Randy

Well done Randy, what models are you getting?
I have found that after a few days of writing the nibs on my pens seem to write better, now, I am not so sure that is the pen though. I think I get used to the sweet spot that the particular nib has an hold the pen accordingly. I know a lot of folks say a pen develops the charectoristics of the user (thus you should never use someone elses pen) but I must admit that I have not found that to be the case with all the vintage pens I have owned, again it is just me getting used to the pens sweet spot! One thing I would say is to flush your pens with water a coupl of times before use. I usually fill two cereal bowls with tepid water, one with one or two drops of dish soap and the other clear. Flush your pen a couple of times with the soap water and then rinse four or five times with the clean water (be sure to replace the clean water for each pen!) I find this eliminates potential problems a lot of folks find when using a brand new pen such as flow of ink. Also. If you find any of the new nibs a little scratchy you might want to do the Brown paper bag trick as that smooths off any rough edges gently. I found I needed to do that with the Lamy I had (no need with any of the pens from Nibmiester Mottishaw!!) just do figure of eights on brown paper until the nib feels as smooth as you want it (I usually check after five or six goes!) Looking forward to seeing the photo's and your thoughts of your new collection, Congratulations once again ![]() |

Congratulations, Randy! Waiting is the hardest part!
![]() Sounds like you will have some fun when they arrive. It seems like a great selection. That will give you a good cross section of the differences between various pens from different manufacturers. Can't wait to see the photos of what you have selected! ![]()

Randy, what a lucky "dog" you are for scoring four fountain pens at once. You will enjoy how they write and will probably never go back to anything else!!!

Fountain pens do not have a break-in period. They either WORK or they DO NOT WORK.
As Shandy theorised about the "pen becoming one with the writer" thing, I'll say this: Fountain pen nibs DO wear down. But this takes decades of daily writing to happen. You need not fear of it happening overnight. You can use other peoples' pens, and they can use yours. Whether or not they break them, is another thing. |

I joined "FountainPenNetwork.com" & "FountainPenForum.com"; that's where I found one of the reviews on the MB. Basically, they said it was not heralded as a true MB writer and that it fell in the slot of something you might get that was found sitting atop your conference materials at a meeting, also some doubted that it was even a "resin construct" but a "casting" - so that didnt chime with me, any thoughts anyone on the GENERATIONs pen?? Thanks, Randy

Randy, it's true that you really have to go spend time in an MB boutique to write with various pens. I had certain pens in mind at first, then after spending an hour in the boutique, I completely changed my mind.
There are sooo many factors. pen length, width, nib size, how it tapers where you hold it, pressure (or lack of) required to write, balance, and so on. Much more beyond what it looks like. I was quite surprised when I tried a dozen or so models how different they are. Good luck with your quest - and show us pix when you get them! ![]()
